Satellite Navigation

Posted by Alex Duggan, 26 November 2005 · 157 views

I borrowed a demo Satellite Navigation unit from work to try out in my car over the weekend, see what they're really like.

These things have got hugely popular over the last year or so, selling tons of them - so just wanted to see what the fuss was all about and if they're as good as the manufacturers claim.

I do love driving, always have done - but it does get so boring just driving miles and miles and miles on motorways and dual carriageways. I needed to go and do some shopping over in Torquay, which is usually a 25 minute drive at most down the A380 Dual Carriageway. So have got this unit, is a nice sunny (albeit bloody cold) day so set it to take me along the costal road instead, with the 'Fastest Route' option chosen.

This thing took me down some of the narrowest, unclassified roads that I've ever seen in my life, it seemed to like avoiding all main roads at any cost! I can only assume that it done this as these roads have 60 limits as they're unclassified, however if I'd done anything near that speed down them I'd be dead by now. Not only that, one of the roads was closed because of roadworks (OK, it wouldn't have known that so fair enough), it also sent me about two miles down this road (when there was a perfectly good main road there) where I went around this corner and a set of bollards appeared in the middle of the road, was only a bloody no thru road! So after slamming on my brakes, followed by a 15'ish point turn in this amazingly narrow lane, set off back to the main road, despite it shouting at me to turn around ASAP.

In the end, it did get me there - it took well over an hour (however this does include a stop in a petrol station for some more screenwash to get the mud from the country lanes off my windscreen and a very soggy, hot, microwaved Ginsters product that at some point in a previous life may have resembled something loosely related to food) - however I must admit it was a hell of alot more fun than sitting on a motorway just going straight all the time!

So in conclusion, if you wan't to get somewhere fast, buy a map. If you want a bit more of a fun journey and have all the time in the world, get into the 21st century and get one of these!

Brightened my day. tongue.gif
Haha, sounds fun laughing.gif

You wanna get one that tells you about roadworks too tongue.gif Although they're goddamn expensive pinch.gif
Mine works fine tho. I takes me thru main roads most of the time. But then again the map in the Netherlands is probably way different then an American one. Trying to get somewhere without using main roads is next to impossible in the Netherlands original.gif

My system also has a traffic jam indication. This is not perfect tho, but that is mainly because the radio stations do not provide the information in a timely matter. At least it gives me the option to calculate an alternative route. In the Netherlands there hardly is any wink.gif

So all in all I am quite satisfied with the navigation system I have... especially the coolest feature, if I say "Bring me home!" and it will automatically start the navigation to my home... only problem is I know the way allready tongue.gif
Oi!! I'm not in America! tongue.gif
Then it must be because you drive on the left side of the road tongue.gif

I do love the only time I've been in one of these cars. "Turn around now, please. Please turn the car around. The system requests you perform a 180 degree turn. Turn the car around now. ... etc."
Sat Nav is the single most useful and annoying invention.    I've learned that you either trust it implicitly - or just ignore it - don't try and second guess it or make it sulk.

We had cause to go to Liverpool last year and it got us there fine. On the way back it crashed at a busy three lane junction forcing me to go round in circles until Debbie could reset it (and program back in our journey). It got confused a few times telling me to "go left" then deciding seconds later "go right at the junction" making me try and claw my way to the correct lane at traffic lights.

It also crashed twice on the way to Birmingham making us stop at services to reset the bloody thing again.

Then, earlier this week on the way back from Milton Keynes (new Ikea) it wanted us to take the M1 south to London which was totally in the wrong direction (although in fairness, I think it was trying to take us on the M1 for a junction to get off onto the road we needed - didn't really want to find out).

When they work, they're great. When they work.
