Introducing IP.Shoutbox

Posted by Alex, 18 June 2008 · 861 views

In our efforts to improve the services offered to you through IPS Resources, we will soon be releasing another community-driven project, IP.Shoutbox. Much like IP.Tracker, this will be an IPS-sponsored project written by you, the community.

We have approached two people who we feel will do a great job on IP.Shoutbox, these two are currently working very hard to produce a beta of the modification. The developers we have chosen are vadim88, and Shawn Dean. These two will keep you up-to-date regarding the status of this project via the IP.Shoutbox forum. IP.Shoutbox is based on Deans modification 'D22-Shoutbox', and he will be working very closely with us on this component.

IP.Shoutbox has been written with IPB3 in mind, for example, the javascript uses the prototype library to allow the move to IPB3 be all that much easier, the code will be commented throughout so people looking to get involved will know what function is doing what, please remember, even though we have two developers who will start this project off, this is a community-driven project, if and when you find bugs, and you know how to fix them, please provide the fix as it makes it all that much easier for the developers! If you have code contributions, please feel free to submit them in the IP.Shoutbox forum, we welcome your input!

As with all community projects, IP.Shoutbox will be offered for free via IPS Resources for current license holders. We will be posting more updates about this project and the updates coming to IPS Resources shortly.

Oh, dear.
Please note that support for this, like all other community projects, is done through these resource forums, and not the standard ticket or phone support. original.gif

Just to clarify.

Oh dear what, exactly?
Good to see IPS look at the modding community to incorporate a widely used mod into the IP. Family.

Not against anyone, but I won't be using this as my community would have no need for it, but I would definitely be interested in helping develop the addon. wink.gif

Good work for getting this under your belt IPS! original.gif
Will the security issues be fixed and will Dean actually work on it cos if I remember rightly he was difficult to get hold of to fix issues.

Unless its a different Dean tongue.gif

Shawn Dean = Dean. original.gif

He used to only go by Dean but has since changed that.

Anyway, nice to see the new project finally being revealed.  I knew something was up when vadim and Shawn became a bit sparse on the forums recently.
I was so happy when I saw the announcement about IP shoutbox cos I thought it was going to be on IPB 3, felt a bit gutted when I read the anouncement sad.gif would rather it had been an official IPB product.

I've always disliked shoutboxes. Just a personal opinion.
Is there really that much of a demand for shoutbox type mods within the community?
i like this project just keep on the best work
and i'll be waiting the beta version to test it
When it will be released ?
D22-Shoutbox is almost notorious for its high server usage, I hope this will be addressed.
This is a blessing, since there isn't any good shoutbox for IPB. I wouldn't mind having a shoutbox...if it didn't glitch.

Yeah, I'd much rather see ShoutOut as the base for an IP.Shoutbox getlost.gif

Agreed, that's what I use too.
Does Shoutbox mean Chatroom? If so, that will be great.

More IPS official sponsored project more better, also it will be much better if there are more IP.projects.

And it will be much much much better if all things(board, blog, gallery, download and other projects) are based on the core of Nexus(not just data-link or something like that).

Please note that it is based on D22-Shoutbox, however the whole thing has been rewritten from scratch with new code etc. It is highly likely that it will be very different from D22-Shoutbox in its first release in terms of code, feature-wise, it would probably be similar.

Please remember the two developers are working very hard getting out a beta with fresh code and all bugs fixed, after this, features will be added or edited.

We thank you for your comments so far and will be looking into more community projects in the future
Thanks Alex for this news
it's great that you support something that many boards need and use !!

Regards

Nice to hear something from Dean. His current modification (D22-Shoutbox) is taking more resources than InfernoTech Shoutbox.
There is query on database forums (ibf_d22shoutbox) which is executed all the time about 10 times.

There are many 's_id' in this (ibf_d22shoutbox) table, also there is already defined index on this field so there is nothing the customers can do.
In terms of the code, we will be doing everything possible to reduce queries, and make it a more server-friendly release. This is an introductory announcement, things will change quite a bit before release original.gif
