IP.Board 3 Facebook Connect

IP.Board will now support a basic implementation of Facebook Connect as an option for logging into IP.Board and associating their account with the same login as their Facebook account. This feature will be off by default and can be optionally enabled by the administrator. We will have a technical specifications draft available in our knowledgebase upon release for those who care, but the basics are as follows:

You must first register an "application" on Facebook's website pointing to the integration file included with IP.Board 3. You then must enter some basic keys that Facebook provides in your ACP.
Users will have the ability to use Facebook Connect to login to your site. They will also have the ability to either associate their Facebook account with an existing IP.Board account, or create a new IP.Board account.
Basic profile data such as avatar, profile picture, "About Me", and status will be synced to IP.Board from Facebook

We have purposely kept the complexity of the various syncing options available through Facebook Connect to a minimum. We have many ideas on how we would like to expand the capabilities in the future, but we wanted to keep this integration basic for the time being.

Facebook Connect support will be available with the second beta release of IP.Board, and will be available on the preview site to test with beginning Monday.

Wow this is a great extra feature. I am looking forward to IPB connecting to other things like facebook in the near future.

Sounds great. Im not sure if I will use this feature but its always nice to have some extra goodies

A question: If I want to associate my admin account with a Facebook account would that cause any problems for me?

I'll be using it for sure! Great marketing to bring back some of the users that stray to SocialNetworking sites. Damn Good Job Forest!

From how I understand it, no, when you associate your Facebook account nothing will change on your IPB account (only that when you hit the Facebook login button you will be logged into that account) - you will still be able to log into the Admin CP using your E-Mail and password as normal.
When I spoke to Matt the other day he said that there would not be a Facebook connect button on the Admin CP login: this might have changed since then, but from what I gather by Matt's explanation, you just log in with your IPB accounts E-Mail and password on the Admin CP.

I'm sure it will all make sense when beta 2 is released

You can log into the ACP as usual after you have linked an existing account. You cannot log into the ACP with a "new" account created with Facebook as you won't have the email address or password.

It is a little complex to follow the back end code. I have written a doc for the staff which I'll clean up for the KB.

With IPB3 and features like this coming I am so happy I invested in IPB and not the obsolete vBulletin.
