IP.Gallery 3.1.0 Preview

Posted by Josh, 04 November 2009 · 127 views

Development for the next version of IP.Gallery is well underway and we're excited to tell you about some of the new features you can expect. Please keep in mind that this is only a sample of the new features and not a complete list.

Friendly URLs

Categories, Albums, and images are now integrated into the global IP.Board 3 FURL system.

Category/Album Covers

It is now possible to specify one of the images in a category or album to be the cover of that category or album. If a cover image is specified, it will always be displayed for that category or album, instead of the last image thumbnail.

Sub Albums

Albums now support unlimited sub albums, which work exactly like gallery sub categories.

Profile Picture Album

You can now create a new kind of album, a 'Profile Picture' Album. After this album has been created, any images that you upload to it will be displayed on the change picture page in your User CP, making them easy to select as your profile image.

New Slideshow

The slideshow has been completely redesigned, you can see the new style in the screenshot below:

More to come

We'll have a lot more to show you in the coming weeks, from new features to an improved interface, we hope that you will enjoy this new version!

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood job.
@yacenty - the update queries to update image view counts has been changed to honor the IPB "delayed view update" setting. That means that image views will be stored to a temporary table and once an hour the number of views for each image is updated on a delayed fashion (the same way image views in the forums can be delayed).

Other performance changes have been made/are coming, but this one specifically should knock out all those "update images set views=views+1 where id=#" queries you presently see.
Image tagging?

Hello,

Great improvement.
Please also handle our problem : we have more than 20k albums. The cache system crash because it can't handle a cache with so many albums.
Please continue improving PERFORMANCE.

Thanks
thanks brandon for every small step in better performance, just now we are struginlig with this problem, but the company that is working on hacking my gallery discovered some ideas how to reallly improve performance of it.
so there is a question - when do You want to show us a new version? Is it matter on mont or maybe quarter or maybe one year?
best regards and whishes all the best
Josh I have been asking for the following feature since the time of IP.G 2+

Is it possible that you add a feature to re-order the albums of a category? Like you can re-order the settings in ACP, with drag-n-drop.
Looking good, lemme have it now!
2 important features I would love to see in 3.1.0:-

Since IPB prides itself on having everything in one place rather than relying on 3rd party addons I think that a far easier way for a user to add a gallery image to a forum thread is a must. We really should be able to click on an icon within fast reply to show our gallery images and click to add to the post.

Automatic resizing of images. This seems to be a problem in just about every gallery I see. You see on places such as facebook if an image is too large it is simply resized to suit, Whereas my users currently simply see an error. Not good for users who are not so computer literate.

1 Nice feature I would like to see:-

Image Tagging. Its such a powerfull feature on facebook and on a business point of view I think this would massivly improve your sales. Any site whatsoever who uses a gallery in a large way would agree with that comment IMO.
Cool

Since some people posted their wishlists, can I do the same? :)

1. Tagging. It's going to be great if tags will be communitywide.
2. Move albums from one category to another by users (moderators). Users are always missing right category and now only admin can move the album. Terrible.
3. Resizing. Yes, we can now limit the largest size of images and all bigger images will be resized. But it's not good in some cases. I have almost unlimited max size of images for panoramas - they can be very, very wide. But if user uploads an ordinary image from his 10mp camera - the image will store in a full size. Not everyone needs this. There can be an option to resize the uploaded image to the specified size.
4. Rotating. Or even auto rotating using EXIF info during upload. A rotating after upload can be hardly made because of watermarks placed during upload - the watermark will be rotated too. We need to store the original unchanged image copy too. Hmmm... An interesting idea...
5. A small feature. Ability not to place a watermark for images smaller than x. In small images a watermark can occupy a half of the image... Not very nice.
6. Editing. What do you think about an image editor? Crop, red eye removing and so on... Today it is possible. :)
dont forget "Notifications" plzzz

The new slideshow looks really nice. Is there a release date yet?
