Welcome to the new Blog!

Posted by Matt, in Blog, Beta 19 November 2009 · 68 views

We've just upgraded the IP.Blogs application we use on these forums to 2.1.0 beta 1. As you can see, it's a fairly substantial upgrade with many new features and improvements. This blog entry will run through the main ones:

Efficiency
I've added several more caching layers for commonly requested data from blogs and entries. This, along with significant SQL query work makes this version the most efficient yet. The improvements are obvious even here. Pages load much quicker with much fewer queries.

User Interface

The user interface has had a complete facelift to bring it up to standard. The new look feels more 'bloggish' and enhances the experience. I've added drop down menus at the top so that you can quickly access common areas and start new entries where you have permission to. The post screen has been overhauled to add functionality. You should find the new version much easier to navigate and easier to use.

Group Blogs

This is a new feature that allows you, the admin, to set up a group-wide blog. This blog is a normal blog in every other way. For example, you could set up a blog for your staff and everyone in the staff group will instantly be able to start writing new blog entries and managing comments, etc.

Blog This!
Posted Image
This is a brand new feature that adds a "Blog This" button to every post. This allows you to use post content in your blog entry. Furthermore, the relationship is remembered and all linked blog entries appear at the bottom of the topic when viewed.

Pre entry Rating
You can now rate each blog entry rather than just the entire blog itself. The blog rating is still shown on the homepage as an aggregate of all rated entries.

Report Item and Reputation
You can now report an entire blog entry, or just a single comment. You can now also give someone a reputation increase/decrease in comments.

There are also countless other improvements and enhancements. Keep in mind that this is very much early beta software so expect bugs! Please report them in the tracker as usual.

Looks pretty sweet.....can I get back on my soap-box and rant about print functionality now? :shifty:

Also, a suggestion that just came to mind - a function to generate blog entries as downloadable/printable PDFs, like you see with CMS articles nowadays?

At any rate.....keep up the great work!
loving the new look and some of the new features too. Nice to see the blog this item :)
looks great; 2 points:

1) Comments loading in ajax would be cool/actually a must
2) Comments page navigation is currently only displayed at the TOP. It should also display at the bottom, for easy access.
This looks like a very nice upgrade! The only thing I don't like is that the tags for the blog are global to the blog and not local to only the blog entry. Are there any plans to change this?
looks great, im excited  to have mine.
Great job Matt!
I'm really liking the new look and the "Blog This" feature is going to be well loved on my site, I think. :)
This is great! and I can't wait to have it.

Suggestions:
1. Is it possible to make any media attachments (pics, youtube) not exceed the size of the div when viewing /blogs/? So when the page is resized any attached media would automatically fit the div and doesn't overlay on the adjacent div/blog.

2. As mentioned by AtariAge, comment pagination block at the bottom of the comments.

3. 'View all blogs' link at the bottom of Blog Home.
Wouldn'd it be awesome if the blog owner could rearrange the blog design to how many columns he likes using ajax drag & drop capabilities. Because some users love two column grids and some users prefer to use only one column.
You can choose between 2 and 3 columns. Take a look.
I was just thinking, is there going to be an option (even if its the same way the current Blog works) whereby members can switch to the legacy view ( ie the listing type view > /index.php?app=blog&view_type=table ) ?

I'm just thinking where there's a lot of Blogs and they may want to see a list of say 20 on one page easily. I know the new layout does display 20 ;) , I'm just thinking of those who may want the list view, which is why I assume it was retained in the current version anyway :)

EDIT... Ignore me I missed it, its already been stated it will return. :D
Doesn't seem to look the same in the "Clean Cut" skin. Please advise.
I think the blog application needs to support quoting other comments but still great overall
Great work on the Blog Matt, loving the changes that have been made :D
