O'Reilly Answers community now available

Posted by Charles, 25 November 2009 · 111 views

O'Reilly Answers is a community site for sharing knowledge, asking questions, and providing answers. The site is powered by IP.Board using creative application of hooks and skinning logic. It also uses the IP.Board OpenID authentication for single-sign-on with O'Reilly. The site is a great demo of what you can do with the new software platform from IPS.

From the O'Reilly announcement:

Quote

We're launching the beta of O'Reilly Answers, and I'm inviting you to be part of it. In brief, O'Reilly Answers is a community site for sharing knowledge, asking questions, and providing answers that brings together our customers, authors, editors, conference speakers, and Foo (Friends of O'Reilly).

Why Answers, and why now?
O'Reilly is at the center of an amazing exchange of knowledge sharing and idea generation. We've created the usual means of facilitating communication between customers, O'Reilly folks, and the outside experts we call "alpha geeks" who contribute to O'Reilly books, conferences, and websites. We can connect through reader reviews, errata submissions, book forums, blog comments, Get Satisfaction, our customer service department, and more. But too much of this conversation is siloed, and not enough is public (e.g., discussions on our internal mailing list for editors, or personal responses to customer questions). O'Reilly Answers will be the place where much of that communication happens from this point forward.

That has got to be the most heavily modded IPB install I've ever seen.
Holy cow! I'm in full agreement with BacTalan. I never thought it would be hard to find common elements you'd see in IPB. Wow!
It's not actually modified. :) Everything is done through hooks, plugins, applications and clever skinning.
When I say modded I mean in a general sense (custom skin, hooks, plugins, apps, etc...).
Wow, that is really nice! I wouldn't even consider it was a IPB forum if you hadn't told me.
Ya, and maybe I'll be an astronaut someday.
Thats IPB?!?!? Man... you have got to be kidden me!! lol Thats freakin amazing! I can tell it's IPB just by some of the links, but the look isn't IPB anymore... lol Wow!
This is very impressive!
how did they make the voting system? Which mod was used for that? It's something that I'm looking for...
Is it IP.Board with IP.Content?
hmm what mods are they using?
What about the tagging system?
Very impressive!!!

What is that 'badge'-system they are using? How is that created?
That is pretty amazing use of IP Board

They probably use it on the forums because the author made it open source and they can make it work how ever they want. Also this site isn't the one that IPS customized recently for them. The Answer site is.

The answer site looks like its using the built in friendly urls in 3.x

I think its actually a waste.

All it is, is a one category forum heavily reskined and some custom hooks as bfarber mentioned. All most all of the features of the forum have been turned off, so it doesn't even act like a forum. I haven't found a PM system, profiles aren't IPB they are O'Reilly's custom user database (probably converge linked). It operates like the early BBS systems and news groups if you ask me.

So why waste time and energy changing a forum software into a moderated blog. IPS probably would have been better off creating a stand alone script to compete with Yahoo Answers and allowing it to integrate with their other products. (That's my opinion)

I doubt we will ever seen any of those hooks released to general public. Paid or Free. Those features are their sites draw and most likely commissioned by O'Reilly. To bad all of our talented community dev's are busy with other projects. These hooks would defiantly be a big draw for some of the more popular sites out there.
