IP.Blog 2.1.0 Development Update

Posted by Matt , in Blog, Beta 01 December 2009 · 2,003 views

You may have noticed that I've updated our blog installation again. This brings many new features sine the last update. This update pretty much wraps up principle coding for new features and although there are a fair few tweaks and bugs to be fixed, we should see a beta release fairly soon.

The new feature highlights are:

List View Returns
A common request was the return of a fully sortable and filterable list view for blogs that emulated a forum view. I have added this in. You'll notice you can click the table headers to sort on that column and click again to reverse the sort. There is also a "List Blogs" sidebar block to quickly filter and list the blogs.
There's even a little 'preview the latest entry' icon that shows the entry excerpt in a pop-up so you don't have to leave the page to preview it.

Dynamic Sidebar Block
I've moved some the footer links (Top 10 bloggers, etc) into a dynamic sidebar along with Recent Entries. This makes it easier to locate and saves a bit of space.

RSS Imports
Another long requested feature was to be able to create entries from an RSS feed. This is now a feature. You can control which member groups have access to this as well as limit the number of items imported on each cycle.

Banish Entries
You can now banish entries from the front page to remove any 'clutter' such as 'testing' blogs or other unsuitable content.

ACP Clean-up
I've gone through and cleaned up some of the Admin CP pages to make them a little easier to understand and navigate. I've added explanations to the 'Headers' / 'Dynamic Headers' pages so it's clear what they do.

Please have a click around and let us know what you think. We've tried very hard to incorporate a lot of commonly requested features in this release and we'll continue to do so over several subsequent releases.

As always, this is late alpha software so please report any bugs into the Blog bug tracker as normal.

err, something wrong with post layout
All fixed.
look at that, over the moon with some of these progressions. Thanks Matt :)

Looks really good, Matt...would I be annoying if I were to harp on about print functionality, or at least some way to export entries (as Word, PDF, RTF or whatever) so they can be printed out for those of us who use the blogs professionally?

Either way, looking forward to the new release!
Nice work.
Listview is back! Yes! My members have been complaining since it was removed years ago.

The updates look great! Nice job Matt :)
Will there be a pagination under the comments as well? I thought you had told so?

RSS Import - Fantastic - thank you very much indeed!

May I ask, can you import articles from multiple RSS feeds (within reason)?

Thanks again!

Great work on the blog so far but one thing I'm still miffed about because it keeps getting overlooked with the Blogs is the lack of a facility where members can easily upload header images and backgrounds.

Its a community blog, where our members have their own blogs and hence identities, so there should be a simple upload facility (kind of like the Easy Logo Changer in the AdminCP) for users to quickly change the look of their blog with both new header and tile images. Also some text input boxes (maybe with an easy colour picker) to alter the branding div background colour and height, and tick-able options to choose to repeat either of the images horizontally or not, without complicated CSS which the majority of day to day users don't know about as they're not web designers.

You really need to include something along these lines IPS! Pretty please!

Will there be an option to use the 2.0.x style of the blogs? TBH, I really don't like the new looks of IP.B, IP.D and IP.G. They just look retarded. Kinda like a 4 year old would make... The blog has no color to it anymore and these "sidebars" get annoying all the time... I'd would rather like to use the first 2.0.x style of IP.B, IP.D & IP.G. They look better... And don't take offense to this... I'm just stating my honest opinions on the new x.1.x versions of the IPS Apps.
