IP.Board 3.1.0 Development News

Posted by Matt, in Beta, 3.1.0 23 December 2009 · 663 views

Laurel resting isn't an activity we do at IPS and we're all very hard at work on IP.Board 3.1.0 now that we've finished primary development on our suite of applications. We've got lots of exciting things planned and progress has already been made on a few key features.

As an early Christmas present to our community and to continue our honest and open development, I wanted to show you one of our already completed 3.1.0 features:

Enhanced Status Updates
During the latter stages of IP.Board 3.0.0's development, we added in very basic status updates in users profiles that was further enhanced by the index page sidebar hook. We've seen this feature get a lot of use on our own community and we wanted to take it to the next logical step and allow archived statuses and status replies.

There is a new tab in a member's profile for recent status updates and recent status actions.

As one would expect, this is all handled via Ajax with normal post operations for those who do not have javascript enabled. Replies appear instantly, comments are deleted instantly and even status updates are removed instantly. See it in action below:

There is also a new page for all status updates:

You can even receive email notification on any replies to your statuses or any replies to statuses you've replied to:

This takes a minor feature and gives it a little more focus and should help increase traffic between user profiles and give more of a social feel to your bulletin board.

Your status can also be updated automatically from Facebook if you are using Facebook connect.

As always, please keep in mind these are early preview screenshots and may change between now and the first public release of IP.Board 3.1.0. As always, we'd love to know what you think.

Not to sure on the recent status tab on profile, as it makes it look more like social network software like facebook, plus shouldn't the About Me tab come before the recent status tab.

Apart from that good work on it
Sounds good! I'm excited to see what other 3.1 updates come.
cant wait for this. Maybe enabling board smilies in status' would be great :)

Do we have a release date for this at all?
Very Good :) Good Works :)

Haha, I was teasing Matt about the "like" feature before he even posted this, as I was sure someone would request it.

One thing we were curious about - what does everything think about the layout? There was some concern that it would seem too similar to Facebook's layout

Well, I think that it is a positive things. People are quite used to Facebook, in this way they will be more comfortable with this function Posted Image

Layout is fine, just I think that the About Me tab should be before Recent Updates tab, like how it was before, members should be able to see this first because it gives information about who the member is etc, if the member decides to put that in there profile.
beautiful things. good job!
good news
we are waiting !!! :thumbsup::thumbsup:
would be nice if it can be connected to twitter or facebook or even some how the status you post on ur site can be be posted on ur twitter and facebook
Any release date?
Nice addition. I agree that allowing Admins/Mods to enable board smilies in status updates would be nice too.
Maybe you could also change the UGLY search box/button of the default skin.
when will this be released ?
This is probably too much to ask for the next release but please consider an article system and layout manager similar to the VB4 cms (but better ;) ) at some point, pretty please

Along with a better navigation system (menu/sub menu system + admincp editor) so that we can create a whole site from the ground up with IPS products :)
Very nice, I hope you guys will make some changes to the reputation system.
Wow this should be cool ;) .. waiting
I too am a little underwhelmed by the status updates, but I guess it's horses for courses. My forum users have all been asking for improvements to the reputations system including the ability to leave comments and the name of the person who repped them, but I guess that improving something that's only relatively recently been implemented would be too much to ask for <_<

I agree, the reputation system needs a lot of work. I have said this before, but I will say it again, the reputation system needs:

1. The ability to prevent a member from repping his friend over and over again (spread the reputation around before you can give it to the same member again).

2. The ability to see who repped you and a comment would be very nice.

And now about some social groups?

As for the status updates, my members use them like crazy and seem to love them, so I am happy to see you fixing them up some. Keep up the great work IPS!
Looks Like Facebook to Me! :)
could you add "manage search results" when you improve search function?
