IP.Board 3.1.0 Dev News: Twitter Integration

Posted by Matt, in 3.1.0, Beta 22 January 2010 · 534 views

I had previously blogged about the status update improvements coming in IP.Board 3.1.0. This blog runs through some exciting new integration features with Twitter.

As IP.Board already has Facebook integration, it makes sense to also integrate Twitter. This further lowers the bar when registering a new account on your forum. If your visitors have have a Twitter account, they can use this to register a new forum account or to "connect" their existing account with their Twitter account.

Integrating your Twitter account allows you to use your Twitter profile picture and description on the board.

You can also import your latest Twitter status onto the board, or post your board status to Twitter. If your forum status is longer than 140 characters, it will cut the status off and automatically add a Bit.ly URL pointing to your forum status update.

You may note that each status update on the forum has a little icon showing where the status originated.

These improvements should increase registrations on your board and generate more traffic to it.

Sounds good, but there is question I have, when will the Windows Live sign-in method get improved upon? It's been out awhile and have yet to get improved or fixed.

What needs to be improved or fixed? There are no open bug reports about the login method to my knowledge. If there's a bug, it needs to be reported so we know to fix it. :)
Also, not only Windows LiVe sign-in, I am still waiting for a full AD support....and some others, too. Not, that I don't like these new login methods and implementations but, AD is an pretty old request and was always flagged for future version......ends up to the question: which version Posted Image

You can sync up both Twitter and Facebook so it imports the latest update from each throughout the day, that's no problem.

Sounds great Matt!
Is it possible to both Tweet and Facebook your forum statuses? Like if the forum pulls my status from Twitter, is it possible to get that status on facebook aswell by clicking a "Post to Facebook" on that status here on the forums?

You talking about Active Directory? If so, we've had LDAP support for several several versions now (back since IPB 2.1). It can be used to integrate with Active Directory just fine (I know, I've helped people set it up).
Will this work even on sites share-hosted by IPS like mine is? I hope so, cause this looks pretty damned sweet! :D
Very Nice Idea ..
This is an excellent addition and sounds particularly configurable - really useful for sites where you don't want Facebook integration but allowing people to login using their Twitter ID will be ideal. Thanks for this - a good development.
Can't wait, epic and very excited just doesn't cover the feeling!
It’s a nice improvement inline of twitter and facebook integration. This will make possible for those who have account in twitter and facebook update their status and profile at the same time.
