IPB 3.1.0: Centralized License Key

Posted by Josh, 09 February 2010 · 768 views

Over the past year we have introduced new services that are available to our IP.Board Standard Licenses holders, such as the spam service and the chat service. We also have plans for more services that will be tied to your license. While this provides a lot of value to your license, managing these services is a cumbersome process, you need to create keys for each of these services and enter them in different areas of the ACP.

We're always looking for ways to streamline and improve your experience, toward that end we will be introduce a new centralized license key that will work for all services. Starting with IP.Board 3.1, all licenses will be given a single key that will grant access to all services available to that license. When we introduce new services, you will automatically have access to that service without having to log in to your client area account to generate a new key and activate it.

IP.Board 3.1 will include a new license manager in the ACP. When you first access the manager, you will see a screen that lets you enter your license key and your forum URL:

After you activate your license, you will be able to see the status of your license and all the services that are attached to that license:

Like all previous versions of IP.Board, your forum will function if you do not enter your license key, however you will not have access to any of the special extra services your license provides until you activate your license key. There will be a grace period where old spam and chat keys will continue to function, however we recommend that you activate your new license keys as soon as possible.

We hope that this simplification of our license key system will be beneficial to everyone and that you enjoy all the services it provides! As always feedback and suggestions are welcome.

That's a nice improvement, especially being able to see when all the various licenses expire on a single page. :)

..Al
Great concept to centralise the system. However I have a few questions though.

Will we still be able to switch Applications from forum licenses like before?(The current flexibility of our licenses)
Are we able to "Reset" the license key in case an admin goes mad and runs away with our key?

Besides of that I think centralisation is a great idea! :)
Indeed - if we say have a community suite and a forum on it's own - can we use the blogs with the stand alone forum?

We are only using one instance of the blogs.

So how would the licence software cope with this scenario?
You simply associated your Blog license with the appropriate Board license.
Then I need not enter more link in the customer area of IPS?
Only in the ACP?
I like it, especially being able to see it all in one page like that.

OT:
When I click to view the full size image of the page (in this blog entry), the side blocks overlap the displayed image, so I can't see the full image itself.
Awesome. 3.1 is looking better and better each day! :D
I have questions for Charles on this?
Cool.

Feel free to post any questions you have, we'll either answer them in the comments or do a follow up blog post
nice to see that :)
It involves the interaction of the new system and skinners/developers, as related to our development boards.

I'd put a "click here to buy this service / product" link next to the "this is not available for you" phrases.
I like the idea of this actually :D
Thanks Charles.

We still have some details to work out with regards to development boards. However, if you do not enter a key, the board is going to work more or less just like it does right now without a key. If you install Blog, Gallery, etc, those will still function. The services you won't have access to until you enter your key are Spam, Chat, and some unreleased services.
Very good :)
Cool addition
I have a small question that doesn't pertain to the blog entry, just curious; What program do you use to get the drop shadow beneath the pictures?
Looks like that dud setting that's been there for a while now has a new purpose. :)
