IP.Board 3.1.0 Dev Update: View Reputation

Posted by Mark, 23 February 2010 · 3,791 views

In IP.Board 3.0 we introduced a simple reputation feature, allowing users to give positive or negative reputation to a post.
While administrators can view who gave reputation through the Admin CP, in IP.Board 3.1 we have introduced a way for all users to view who gave reputation on any given post.

To view who gave reputation, you just click on the reputation number at the bottom of the post which will now display a popup balloon indicating who has given reputation.

There is a per-group setting to control who can use this feature. If a user does not have permission to use it, the number will not be clickable and appear unchanged from how it currently is.

The data is loaded through an AJAX call when the link is clicked, so there is no additional queries to the topic view for this feature.

What if 100 users gave reputation?
That's fantastic, I'd really love to see the Reputation system further expanded. I get asked about this all the time on my forum, just a day or two again in fact. One thing that my users really want is the ability to see which of their specific posts have been voted up (I only allow positive voting). Would be fantastic if you could create a page to allow people to see that, perhaps from a user's Profile page (so everyone could look at other users' "interesting" posts). You'd be my hero. ;)

Yes, I agree with them 100%! Posted Image

Example see in the Topic and Memberlist:
Positive (10) / Average(-10) / Negative (20)
I use a mod ([AH30] Reputation 1.0.2) that gives people the ability to type a reason why they voted positive or negative. If nothing has typed it shows as default. Then the author of the post can show the last 5 reputations on his profile screen (configurable to show last 10 or even 15).
Then there is a side bar hook to show the last X of reputations given global wise. Of course with the reasons and link back to the post.

Since that is exactly how I want it I hope I can continue that mod as that mod is more thought about as looks like it currently.
Please keep feature requests and such to the feedback forum. They will get lost as blog comments :)

Well, this does seem to be an appropriate place to comment on the reputation system, since presumably the Invision staff (including the person who posted the blog entry) will check back and read the comments. :) I know that what I suggested above has been repeated more than once in the forum itself. Just using this as an opportunity to hit someone in the head with it again, while work is actually being done on the reputation system. :D

Would prefer to see it in two or three columns rather than just one for busier forums. Or perhaps horizontal.

At least with this, I guess it might be easier to change to a 'thanks' type system - which in my opinion is better than a positive / negative system.

I guess what CCharles is saying - is duplicate suggestions in the forum :)

For a "Thanks" system I would suggest shutting off negative rep and changing the + icon to a little thumbsup or even an icon that just says "thanks" on it.
I'm not saying you CAN'T post stuff here I'm just saying it's more likely to be overlooked :)

What I'm saying is these suggestions are already duplicated in the forum. Might not hurt to reduplicate them again. ;)

This is excellent - what's even more impressive is I see that it wasn't that long since this was suggested and here it is announced already!! Good work!
i think there is a mod called (view reputation points by SOSinvision lol :D)
Fred is a spoilsport. Mark's post wasn't worth negative rep! :(

Yep, it's right here:

This does essentially the same thing as what's described in the blog post.

I know, right? Of all my alter-egos, I dislike him most.

I hope there's a setting to allow who can see the negative points, as my hook do.
Haha! I coded this very thing for my site in September last year. It's useful that it's inbuilt now. :)
Great to see this has been added

Sadly one cannot simply replace the icon as the same icon is used to open up the options etc.

Would be nice if it was separate to enable a simple thanks system to be enabled.

So it would mean further changes - so if it could be independent from other icons that would be great :)
