IP.Nexus Dev Update: Client Area

Posted by Mark , 03 June 2010 · 2,701 views

There are many areas of IP.Nexus which the user needs to be able to manage: past orders, active purchase, support requests, etc.

We decided, rather than trying to shoe-horn these features into the User CP, which was not really designed for such functions, to create a new "Client Area", specific to IP.Nexus.
This is what it looks like:

In this blog entry we'll be talking about the "Purchases" and "Invoices" sections of this Client Area.

Purchases

The "Purchases" section (shown above) will list all active purchases on your account.

Clicking the "View Info" button takes you to an overview page for the purchase:

Here you can update any custom package fields if the field allows you to do so (fields can be set to not be editable after purchase if you desire).

If the item has renewal terms and you are within the time you are allowed to renew the package, you can click "Renew Now" to renew. Doing this will take you straight to the payment screen, and once paid, the expiry date will be updated.

If the package is part of a group which allows upgrading and downgrading, you can click the "Change Package" button to do so:

Depending on your settings, upgrading may be free or they may be charged the difference, and if downgrading, they may be refunded the difference - exactly what will happen, along with the new renewal terms is shown for each selection.
If the user must pay the difference to upgrade, they will be taken to the payment screen and once payment clears, the package will be changed.
If the user is to be refunded the difference when downgrading, it will be applied as credit on their account (we will discuss account credit in a future update).

Invoices

This is what the Invoices screen looks like:

As you can see, invoices are separated into tabs:
Pending invoices are orders which the user has started but not finished or cancelled, or have been generated by the system (for example, when a package is due for renewal) or have been generated by an administrator.
Paid invoices are past orders which the user finished successfully.
Expired invoices are previously pending invoices which have now expired. The user can still pay expired invoices, but the service they relate to (for example if it is a renewal invoice) would have deactivated.
Cancelled invoices have been cancelled by the user or an administrator.

You can click on an invoice to view details:

If the user can pay an invoice, they will see the "Pay Now" button which will take them to the checkout page (which we discussed previously in this blog entry).
If the user has credit on their account, they will also see an "Apply Credit" button which will allow them to use their account credit against the invoice total.

This concludes the Invoices and Purchases area of the Client Area. We will be discussing other areas of the client area in future blog entries.

From either perspective (as a customer or as an administrator), Will you be able to print off Invoices? (Bonus if it is able to be done as a PDF)

I hope information isn't spelled "informaation" like in the 2nd image.
I do plan on buying IP.Nexus...

@Sokii - lol @ mis-spelling.

I do plan on buying IP.Nexus when it's released. :)

@Charles | Painted Horse - I do hope "PDF View" is an option in printing, it'd be cool to have. Though, the current way in the client area is nice too. ;)

Lol I know. xD
I also hope a .pdf view can be included and the client area is just perfect besides the mis-spelling. :P
I want beta fast fast please !!!
Definitely looking forward to the beta!

One question: With 3rd party mod integration or IP.Downloads integration, is it possible to link from items listed in the Purchases section to the actual purchased item/download?

Yes.
Is it possible to get an update on when we might* get a price and release information?

Disclaimer: For those who do not understand what the word "might" means, it does not mean a guarantee. If Mark or another IPS staff member mentions a possible date and that date passes without delivery, they did not PROMISE it so back off! Unlike you, I like when IPS gives us information so please don't be a rotten egg.

This makes me more in love with it.

I'm hoping to release alpha builds to internal testers next week and beta releases to anyone wanting to pre purchase once I've done all these blog entries (which I'm keeping at 2 a week and have a couple weeks left of yet).
Although, due to the recent release of 3.1 it depends how quickly the support rush dies down - at the moment, support demands my attention all day.
There's also a few areas Rikki and I still need to put finishing touches on.

As for pricing, when we've decided, we'll you'll know ;) I don't want to say numbers until it's final.

Thanks. (Get that folks, he said HOPING to, as in, if it doesn't happen that soon, get over it!)

On the pricing, is there a chance it'll run along the same as Blog/Downloads, or will it definitely be more (but unsure)? Not quite sure how to phrase it any better than that, other than wanting to know if it's a definite 'higher than' the others or not. Someone mentioned about not being surprised or that they expect it might run close to $100, so just trying to get a feel for what we might expect. Not asking nor expecting a price range or anything. Hopefully you get where I'm coming from and can answer it in a way that people can't be a Barney's Girlfriend about it (yes I typed out the BG words).

Would it be possible to add own pages/own content to the customer area?
it would probably cost around $65
Wolfie, I actually asked in a ticket because I need to know to issue a quote on a project to a client, and "we don't know" is the official word on the price. Asking more times is unlikely to change that.
I'm really looking forward to implementing this in our forums. Our forums are focused on a national park and we have many professional photographers that shoot that park that could use this to sell their prints. Great add-on!
Is there any consideration to cross link "My Settings" and "Client Area" together?

As IPB grows, so is the amount of settings, its bad enough getting people to click on my settings, let alone explain where settings are in there... by adding the 'client area' in a separate location (which I'm 50/50 split on the idea) its creating yet another place members need to go to.

It would be useful if "Client Area" appeared as a tab in My Settings, but linked to the relevant page... vice versa also...

As I've typed this, I feel it should all be in one central area under 'my settings', but I do appreciate I have no idea of the workings behind the scenes, so no doubt easier said than done!

Regards

Jim

I originally did it as a tab in the UCP - it wasn't very easy to use. It felt crammed in.

The UCP is really just for settings. Things like sending in a support request didn't seem right in there.
