What's new in IP.Board 3.1.2? Incomplete Members

Posted by Matt, in 3.1.x 13 July 2010 · 485 views

In IP.Board 3.1.0 we added a 'step through' form that users registering via Twitter and Facebook were prompted to complete before being fully registered. This was so that the user could choose their own display name and complete an email address when it wasn't available from the service (such as Twitter).

If a member chose not to complete this form then their registration would not be complete and their account would be missing some data such as a display name and valid email address. This led to some confusion when viewing the member list in the Admin CP.

Was this a bug? Was IP.Board mysteriously deleting member information? To prevent this confusion, we've removed these 'incomplete' members from the member list and added a new section to manage them.

This new section clearly lists those members that are still in the process of completing their registration. It also identifies which service they used to start the account creation process. If you choose to delete these partial accounts, the member can always re-sign in to repeat the process.

We hope this little feature cuts down on confusion and removes 'clutter' from the Admin CP member list.

I agree with his underlined portion. Some older IPS products such as IP.Downloads need some tweaking in the ACP to make it easier to manage.

For instance, why isn't the IP.D category editor got the same feel as the Forums Manager? :x

Just my thoughts
maybe its time that invision had a look at how it does it releases

would have thought that with so many bug fixes in this upcoming release, the first priority would have been getting it out and leaving new features or third party related fixes for later

not so much "whats new", but "now fixed and available" would be the headlines I like to see
I agree with you cirem, but it's a necessary evil these days... if you're not linked to them, then you're simply out of the loop.
(mind you, I know this will be abused by my members once i make it available to them for sure...) dammed if ya do/dammed if ya don't! :)
Guys, did you read the blog entry? It's not a new feature.

All we did was separate users that don't have a display name into a separate window in the ACP, because the existing display was confusing customers. That's all. That's not a new feature, that's polishing an existing feature that is causing confusion and tickets.

When we can do small things like this in between big releases, it helps you, it helps our technicians, it helps everyone all around. I don't really see where the problem is here. It's not like we added Facebook Connect, itself, to a minor point release.
I'd like to have that kind of control over all the members when listed. That check box/delete all option comes in handy if you have a number of unwanted members that need to be bulk deleted. Or, for those of us who have converted from another software, we may be carrying members we wish to shed and that process is tedious having to go one by one. It's an impossible task when you don't want to bulk delete all the validating/unwanted members.

Thanks.

I love what I see so far, just need a bit more powaaahhhhhhhh.

You can already do mass deletes, the problem is that the search criteria isn't always enough to narrow down who you want to eliminate. I've been mentioning the ability to check off each account you want to (move/delete). Just a matter of more people wanting it I guess. Also, requests should go into the feedback forum, otherwise staff might not see them.

More Facebook/Twitter stuff? Meh... not interested.
Not exactly more.

Just making existing features more functional.

I'd rather see IP focus their effort on improving the software itself rather then all this integration stuff for "fad" sites of which your business has no control over. Infact once you have created this integration(which you have already now) you allow Facebook/Twitter or whoever to control you (E.G They make large changes to their API, and you have to fix your software because you have customers ranting about how they can't connect anymore) and it makes additional unnecessary work for yourself.

I have to agree on not getting to tied into Facebook and Twitter so tightly. What's here today is gone tomorrow. It has nothing to do with me liking them by the way. This could be a nightmare. It should have been left as a third party mod. Personal preferences should never enter into an engineering design phase and I can't help but think there is this influence. My users have never asked for this type of stuff....and look at how long I have been around here and following what Matt does. A LONG time.

Example: I would think a feature such as multiple user detection for SECURITY purposes would be a better feature that's much more valuable than Twitter/Facebook stuff. By far!
Can you make a feature that every week as a task or cron the board will email incompleted members to ask them to come back and finish registration?
I'm glad IPB has done all this work to connect with various networking sites. If thats where I can find new customers, then Im glad that I can easely connect to them ... and visa versa.
Those networking sites are big and popular enough to not ignore them but instead use them to make it your visitors as easy as possible to login at your website and spread the word about you.

Afterall, it can all be disabled and your visitors would not see any trace or link to any of those networking sites if you, as the webmaster, do not wish to be connected to those networking sites, So in my opinion is a win - win situation.

BTW: I think it's very logical to extend the login modules and connections since IPB started off with IP.Converge
nice !!!!
Does this work with adding a required custom field after your forums have been running for a little while? (Meaning having already members that have actually completed their registration)

I'm going to take a guess and say no. I think it's more for the main information being requested, like a display name. I think it means that someone got to the part of making a display name but stopped there, so you have a new registration but it was stopped midway through.
A user is only considered incomplete if they don't have a name or email specified. The above changes do not apply to custom fields.
Will this message appear each time they log in, if they don't complete the fields the first time? I have a couple users who joined through Twitter and are sitting as "incomplete" users, but they have logged in a couple times since they joined, and I'm not sure what's up with them.
Why is incomplete members showing up under "members" tab? I don't want them to show up there.
