IP.Gallery 4.0 - Media Uploading

Posted by Matt , in Beta, Gallery 06 December 2010 · 1,677 views

I've seen a few topics in our feedback forum asking how media uploads are handled in IP.Gallery 4.

The current version allows you to upload certain video files via a separate upload interface and displays them using basic embed tags which may ask the viewing user to download special plug-ins such as Quicktime to view them.

Video encoding is beyond the scope of IP.Gallery 4.0 as such functionality would need server level software to be installed. Similarly, to fetch a keyframe or thumbnail from a video file needs the same server level functionality.

However, media uploading and viewing has been much improved in Gallery 4.0. You can upload videos alongside normal photos and quickly add a thumbnail to the video. If you upload a m4v, certain mov files and flv files, these are played in a Flash video player much like YouTube.

I've recorded a quick screencast of the process used to upload a video taken from my iPhone to IP.Gallery 4.0.

As always, full screen HD is recommended.

Looks great!

because it uses flash to play - is there an option for non-flash (ipad / iPhone) playback?

Not yet, although I am looking into some HTML 5 options.

Will we be able to replace the flash player with our own player? For example I have one that does flash and will also show HTML5.

Nice !
Looking great :) Would be nice to be able to link to and play videos within Gallery from say YouTube as well - would save having a second app for this. Perhaps then including a screenshot from say YouTube or Vimeo.

(appreciate suggestions should be in forum - so will probably post there as well)

Yes, please invest into the future. I know that flash currently is a necessary evil, but the support for unix-based systems is bad, really bad. So I would love every step towards HTML5 (in any case)
Nice work Matt

That looks great! Any options for embedding much like the gallery images? It would be great if we could add a watermark to images/videos which will help bring people back to our web site :)

this looks great
Great work Matt as usual :) If you can't put another player in, so be it. That's called life and I can easily work around it with 0 problems. Keep up the superb effort and I can't wait until the final version!
I'm looking forward to this verision 4! Great work! :)
It looks nice but what about the performance of whole system?
Awesome Matt,
Could you include it as an alternative the JW player, it has html5 capabilities already. Also, can you include a way we can add either or for players and if we can add the licensed versions of these players that remove their logos. I own my own license of JW player for example and when you buy the license it removes the logo. Same with Flowplayer.

Kind Regards
Is there error checking for users also Matt? If someone tries to load a file to big is there something that tells them that and then something that explains how big the max file size can be?

Kind Regards
The file size should be checked against the server settings, sorry, forgot to add that.

Regards
Uhhh, caaaant waaaait!!!!!
swf?

That would still be the primary format Jing and other free screen capture software use. It would be most beneficial for our audience. Looks great otherwise!
