Spam Monitoring Service Statistics

We thought everyone might find a few statistics from our Spam Monitoring Service interesting. Since the rate of spam registrations has greatly increased since the first of the year we are of course seeing greater activity on the service.

All stats are since 1 January 2011 to 13 January 2011.

  • The spam service has processed 300,000 requests and the rate is accelerating as more people are activating the service since spamming has increased over the last couple weeks.

  • About 30% were marked as spam accounts and therefore prevented from registering on IP.Board's that use the service. This is of course a much higher percentage then even a few weeks prior to the influx of spam registrations.

  • The service has "learned" from the activity and permanently black listed about 5000 emails and IP addresses.

  • Of those the service blocked, about 10% were due to IP.Board administrators and moderator using the "flag as spam" feature which tells the service that an account is from a spammer. So keep reporting!

It's our hope that Google's reCAPTCHA service will soon be improved. In the mean time be sure to follow the tips in our announcement to prevent spam registrations.

We can never 100% stop spam but our Spam Monitoring Service is another tool to help prevent registrations from impacting your community. The service is a free IPS Extra for anyone with an active IP.Board license or IPS Community Hosting client.

Thats all great, but what you should really look into is that "Spam Monitoring Service" stops working when you move your IP.Board installation to new server... For almost two months this service didnt work for me, it had to be reseted for me by IPS tech support... :(

Other then that really loving this service!

All you need to do is reset your licence key / update your URL in the Client Center and you should be good. There is a listing in your ACP of the status of it if in doubt. :)


Back on topic, excellent to hear its doing so well. It's worked quite excellently for me so far. :)

Great news. The main reasons for renewing my license was because of the Spam Monitoring Service.

So far the service has been performing well. I've had a few spammers get through and I marked them as a "spammer". What happens if I delete the account after marking it as a spammer? I just want to be sure the account was still flagged as a spammer, even if I deleted it.

Lastly, it would be great if there was a way to automatically delete an account "rather than banning" who is a "known" spammer. I get around 30+ registrations daily and about 90% of those are banned since they are known spammers..

It's perfectly safe to delete the user after marking them as a spammer.  At the point you hit "Flag as spam" it notifies the service, and you can perform any other actions you feel appropriate on your end.

Spam monitoring service needs option to reject registration to known spammers, this is just pain, all spammers are moved to banned group. In that group they are mixed with my banned users and I need to select everyone of them and delete and atm I got 20-30 spammers registering every day.

There's no way to actually run their information in the system until after they register and provide the details to begin with, however, thank you for the feedback.

I finally shut down registration on my 2.3 board and added an easy Q&A on my 3.1 board and now I don't have to have constant emails about registrations.

Whats wrong with reCaptcha, if you're referring to the Chad Houck hack i do believe that was fixed a long time ago (july 2009) and was only successful 10-30% of the time. I wasn't aware of any new exploits?

Jaggi, the latest version of the most popular forum spamming toolkit can now solve reCaptcha.  reCaptcha is no longer sufficient protection on its own.

You know technically it's not a "Free" Extra, if it requires a paid subscription to maintain, even if you are wrapping it into something else...

Jaggi, "10-30% of the time" is a huge success rate for a tool like that, completely unacceptable if you take into account the amount of spam activity on global scale.

There was much talk about this tool on IPS forum, long before you announced spam monitoring service:

Anyways this tool checks nick, e-mail and ip and if 2 or 3 are matched it rejects registration, I'm sure you could do something like that in ajax to check each field, registration could be little slower but I could live with that.

Second thing spam users and users in my validating group are moved to spam list. In there give me option to delete them right away, so I can review them all if they are all spam mark them and delete. In banned group I got regular users so I need to deselect them and then delete spammer, this would be much quicker even if you do not implement how script in first part of my post works.

lol I don't see how anyone benefits enough from the forum spamming tow arrant them wasting so much time solving new captcha hurdles.

People make a *lot* of money as a result of forum/blog spam, and thus are willing to pay for expensive tools to do it. The one mentioned here costs $500 to buy.

This is great news. Since this Spam Monitoring began and IPS adopted reCaptcha into IPB, I've noticed a 99% drop in the spambots trying to get through the registration process. To date, only two new accounts have gotten flagged with the new SMS. Thanks for setting this for us, guys.

A "delete" option has been added to the manage spam members page for 3.2.
