IP.Board 3.2.0: New reputation mode - "Like"

Posted by Matt, in Beta, 3.2.x 25 February 2011 · 6,366 views

In IP.Board 3.0.0 we added a reputation system. This allowed your members to "up-vote" and "down-vote" a post's "reputation". This not only allows you to quickly identify "valued" replies but you can also elect to filter out replies below a certain threshold.

This system has worked very well over the past few years and our own community receives many hundreds of positive votes for good or helpful content. It's a nice visual way of saying "Thanks!'.

We have extended this system in 3.2.0 to add a new reputation 'mode' selectable from the Admin Control Panel. This new mode works in the same manner as a "like" system often seen on social networking sites.

This "like" system is an even better visual way for identifying good content and makes it more personal by leaving your name in the "like" list rather than it being an anonymous donation.

Here are some screen shots:
Note: the following screen shots have been taken from my local development board. Expect the final interface to change

Here you can see that I've "liked" this post along with some other members.

Clicking the '1 other" link brings up an inline pop-up showing exactly who has "liked" this post.

Here's a brief video showing the system in action:

We hope that you "like" this new enhancement to our reputation system and find it brings a new level of interaction with your members.

I "like" it very much. Thank you. :)
Erm, sorry to nit-pick - but where is the "like" button?
What will happened with negative reputation. Will it become Disliked by...
Matt's screen shots are a bit confusing but right now it goes off the "+" button. The final interface will clean that up :)
So it'll be a simple button/link with "like" and you just click it?

No pop-ups, options, tickboxes, etc. - just a plain, simple, easy "like" ?

Sounds good to me ...

Cheers,
Shaun :D
nice! :)
How hard would it be to implement something like this into topics in 3.1.4 by ourselves? I won't be upgrading to 3.2 but this is a feature I have been avidly looking into.
Hopefully if this involves a similar button to the 'like' on the blogs and third party apps, it will use a different language bit.

Why? Well on the other apps such as the blogs it doubles as a watch button, so we are thinking of changing the wording on it. If this uses the same language file, then we will have the new word/phrase showing here.

Apart from that it sounds great :)
Why are many of the new features trying to be like Facebook? :o
Will have a LIKE to + and what will appear to replace the - button ? Or it won't exist anymore ? It's simply LIKE or not ?
How about a short comment, while "liking"?
A few things:

As I mentioned in the blog entry, the interface will be cleaned up. That is Rikki's department. :)
Right now, when you click the "plus" button (and 'like' mode is enabled from the Admin CP) then the rep is increased and you show as 'liking' the post. When you click the red negative button your like is removed and the rep is decremented.

The current "like" stuff you see on Blog and Gallery is going to be relablled as "Follow" which makes more sense as it ties into the notification system.
You can see it in action here: http://dl.dropbox.co...86/postlike.mov
When I use the default + sign, hardly anyone clicks on it or understands it. I have since replaced it with a huge green thumbs up with the word Thanks under it (about 8x bigger than the +). Doing this made the response rate go way up (probably 50 or 100x more than before). It would be good to consider something more like this.
Yes, we have options for the interface, I simply used the images we already had. :)
sounds great

but why is the soon to be released version of gallery not using it ?

imo needs to be ported across to all other invision aps at the time of release rather that the usual wait for the next release scenario/treadmill

as its all getting a bit hard to follow

ipcontent doesnt use any sort of like, but its separate comments system use reputation, the new yet to be released version of gallery uses the "old" like, does the old version of gallery uses favourites (think i switched it off)
plus seems you may need to use the old version of gallery if you want to use ipcontent with it, then what happens to notifications if the old like system is retired from downloads and replaced by this

in a nut shell
any chance of once and for all getting all the apps and the core all at the same point of dev, all using the same features at the same point of time and get rid of all these duplicate similar features
In 3.0, 3.1 reput show all result but I need reputation show +2 / -1 like SMF

What will happened with negative reputation. Will it become Disliked by...

I hope so. Thats what facebook needs.
So ... "like" ... will be ... "follow" .... hmmmm Posted Image

If someone makes a post that I "like" I won't necessarily be "following" it - I'll simply like it and forget about it.

Follow implies some level of monitoring, checking back, reviewing ... so it's the wrong word to use IMHO ... totally wrong; it also runs against all the other social software that uses "like" for something you ... well ... just ... like.

Cheers,
Shaun :D
We don't want to hold Gallery 4 back until 3.2.0 is released.

Shaun - I get that it's confusing at the moment. Probably best to wait until we have the final interfaces - it'll make more sense. :)

Posts/comments will have "like"
Everything else will be "Follow".
