Development Update: IP.Board 3.2.3

Posted by Matt , in 3.2.x 14 September 2011 · 6,530 views

Since the release of IP.Board 3.2 a few months ago, our immediate focus has been on fixing the bugs that have been reported and making fairly frequent releases to our customers. We're thrilled that IP.Board 3.2 has been a huge success and we've received a lot of feedback which we've enjoyed reading.

Now that the initial wave of bug fixes have been made, we've found the time to add in some functionality based on feedback from our customers. Here are some of the IP.Board enhancements that have gone in for 3.2.3.

HTML Emails
This has been a very popular request for a long time now and we've included this into 3.2.3. By default it is off, but you can enable it from the Email settings page in the admin control panel. This will also resolve issues with non Latin characters, right to left languages and more.
The HTML email wrapper is fully editable via the Look & Feel templates as normal and it automagically converts the current plain text templates into HTML so you don't need to change anything!

Import a URL Photo
We've had a fair number of requests for a simpler way to import a photo so we've included the ability to import a photo from a URL when in the photo editor. This copies the image to the forums server so it can be checked (to make sure it's actually an image!) and to create the thumbnail copy.

Editor Improvements
IP.Board 3.2.0 introduced a brand new editor and it really is one of the most complex areas of the software (no, really!). We've put a lot of focus into squashing those annoying BBCode bugs. We've also gone ahead and added the auto-save and 'toggle mode' functionality for editors in the admin control panel.

Of course, there are also numerous other bug fixes and improvements including more efficient Sphinx index building, iPad compatibility and more!

Are there any plans to expand the email templates in a future version to take better advantage of the HTML capabilities?

Does the 'import from URL' feature reimport the image periodically, or is that once-off?
The HTML email system is already to do. You can add custom wrappers, set specific HTML versions of the email and more.

The import URL feature. Right now, it's a once off deal. I may make it do it daily along with Twitter and Facebook, though.

Excellent! May I ask if IPB 3.2.3 will include the newly released CKEditor 3.6.2?

ah sorry i miss read your message.
Big changes! the management of the HTML I was able to expand it? ie html to insert even in the subforums and the ability to add different skins for forum/section...
Nice!!
More rows for the smilies please (can be setted up)… really annoying when you have +300 emoticons.
The "show all" button that opens a pop-up is not really a good solution.

Thanks!

I am not good enough in English to convince you that it is the best change you can do - but I thought a long time ago about suggest you to change the personal-conversation system to something similar like Facebook did - without message-titles, but only a sequence of conversation for each couple of users. Just try to see what people wrote in the titles, it's nothing more than "Hi", "Hello", "See Please" or "...".

However, I think you must fix this very old bug before moving forward to add new features:

HTML emails? I absolutely love the sound of that - and getting to customize their templates, no less. I'm enabling those as soon as 3.2.3 comes out, and I'm sure I'll get a positive reaction to them from my members. But will users be able to choose between HTML and plaintext emails themselves in their UCP's? Some people may, for whatever reason, prefer the plaintext format, and I've seen sites that let you choose between the two.

On another note, is there any chance we might see post revisions in 3.2.3? There's a paid mod available for them, but I'd be happy to wait for 3.2.3 if they're going to be added to the core.
html emails w00t w00t ... I already have the template for them

Please bring back the editor of 3.1.x for God's sake, as the new editor, spoils all the formatting of text copied from websites, giving more work (great work) to clean it up, this problem did not exist previously, and even alternating editor, give it gets worse ... Please reconsider ...
