IP.Gallery 4.2.0: Functionality improvements

Posted by Matt, in Gallery 06 November 2011 · 917 views

IP.Gallery is our popular photo and movie sharing platform for IP.Board. We've been working on updates and I wanted to take you through several today.

You've already read about the bigger features for IP.Gallery 4.2.0 such as tagging, quick navigation, moderators' control panel, album selector and the Admin CP updates.

This entry covers a few of the smaller updates - most of which have been requested via our feedback forums.

Image View Updates
We've made a few cosmetic changes to the view image page to bring it inline with IP.Board 3.2's look and feel. The image title /follow image button is now in the same format as a topic title for consistency.

Image Only Global Album
We've now made it possible to have a global album that only accepts images and not albums.

Sort by title
You can now sort an album by image title. This can be set when adding or editing an album as well as being available dynamically.

Like and Reputation
We've added in the like / reputation button. The screen shot shows the system in the 'like' mode. If you chose reputation mode, it would display the plus and minus buttons as normal.

Member's Album
We've added in an enforced global album named 'Member's Album'. This is the default parent for any new member albums. This helps to separate the global albums a little and allows you to better set permissions. If you only want your members to create albums in your existing global albums, then you can deny permission via the edit album feature.

This wraps up our series of IP.Gallery updates. I hope you've enjoyed them!

In before the "what, no zip upload?!!". :D

When you say the new "Member's Album" will be "enforced", does that mean it can't be turned off? I don't use member albums at all so don't want this album showing up on my gallery's homepage.

Aside from that the improvements sound good.
Yes, you can turn it off by removing all permissions. It will then vanish from the front end.
...still don't know why we need a .zip-Upload feature !?
My main concern is how easy to upload an image to the gallery for a regular web user or forum member!!
What about lightbox navigation within album? Do i still need click on each image separately to browse through photos in one album?
Yay!
So that's it? We're stuck with square thumbnails, no option to resize thumbnails, no options of what appears on the Gallery portal page and nothing to indicate that the medium sized image can be clicked on to display the full size / original image. We had all this with Gallery 3.

Please give us back the functionality that we had with Gallery 3.

Are we able to turn this off in the album as my members think it is a childish facebook feature.

Many thanks
This was a nice way to display the "gallery card" into the topics

You do not need a .zip-Upload feature to upload "picture series".

You have the advanced flash uploader, so you can upload multiple files at once - without a useless .zip-upload feature.
I like all the new functions, I think they were needed and we will benefit from them. Each of our presentations represent completely different online community and as such we admins will logically tend to ask for functions we think they are the most important ones. IP have to obviously balance what is the best for the desired direction of the script and for most of the users. I am glad after so many requests from users the script looks balanced and looking quite minimalist. There is always a thread for the most wanted Gallery features here .
Ah.....what about zip upload Matt, you did say it was coming back in this update over summer time.

Yes but you have it all in one place a one click upload and it done. EZer then choose this or that.

LOL...

Sorry, but uploading multiple files with the flash uploader is the same thing as uploading a zip.

When you will upload zip files you need to create a zip archiv with all files BEFORE you can upload. With the flash uploader you can upload WITHOUT creating the zip archiv - i think the flash upload is more useful, easy to use and innovative.

Last I saw the flash uploader works great for a small number of images, but when I used the gallery I would upload 500-1000 images at a time. Zip file is easiest for this. I really wish the gallery would get some of the admin control back it used to have. It is headed in the right direction and the square thumbnail issue is the only thing holding me back from looking into it again. As it is I had to leave it behind for other options.

the square thumbnail issue

It is an option for admins to set whether or not to use square thumbnails in the current version already.

Works fine for me when uploading 1132 images - fast and easier than a .zip Upload. :)
