IP.Board 3.3 Dev Update: Reputation Enhancements

Posted by Mark , in 3.3.x 05 January 2012 · 13,920 views

IP.Board has featured a reputation system since 3.0, allowing users to give positive or negative reputation to posts, as well as content in other apps in the IPS Community Suite (blog entries, gallery images, etc.) as well as content in third party applications.
In IP.Board 3.2, we enhanced this by adding a new way of viewing the reputation system, in terms of "liking" content as opposed to giving reputation, which is a more common social feature on websites today.

In IP.Board 3.3, we're adding two features to utilise the reputation system in content discovery.

Reputation in user's profile

We've added a new tab to the profile which allows you to see both the content that the user has most recently liked, as well as content the user has made which has been most recently liked.

This of course supports both reputation modes (the "Like" system and the traditional reputation system).

The tabs at the top allow you to choose which application you want to view content from (in the screenshot only Forums and Calendar are viewable, but of course, support will be added for other apps and 3rd party developers can also add support), and also toggle whether you want to see reputation given or reputation received.

Content with the highest reputation

In addition to the profile tab, we've also created a new page (the link to which appears in the footer next to the top posters, etc.) which shows the content which has the highest rating, or has been liked the most.

Just like on the profile tab, you can toggle between which application you want to view the content for.

Both systems of course also work exactly the same with the traditional reputation system:

Nice.

Did you plan to add reputation sort key in member list, as post count and join date ?

Really good idea !
While the all-time most popular link at the bottom is a nice step in using the reputation data to aid discovery, it would be very nice to have a sidebar widget that showed the most liked recent content.

Getting the recently high-rep stuff could be made overly complicated, but could also be as simple as showing the highest ranked posts that have received votes within the last N days.

Why forum icons feature not included in this build ?
hmmm, well having both types of liking seems a bit over the top. I know you may be responding to input received on the feedback forums but I am getting the feeling the 'engineers' are taking over ... there are so many gizmos and gadgets to run this, tweak that, twist this, turn that, in the end, the more "run of the mill" board user ...., who I always advocate for vs. those power users who are on here, providing you with the vocal feedback, are going to get sick from too much candy, if you get my drift ...

keep it clean, don't make me think, make it intuitive, and keep it simple ...

as you begin to shape 3.3, ask yourselves if you are doing that or are you falling victim to the "oh, wouldn't it be great if we had this, and that, and then this and oh yeah, that too" syndrome ...
Both types aren't available together - I was just demonstrating how the new feature works with how you already have configured the system :)
Finally!

I disagree with this.

please also bring 'Like this'/reputation for Ipcontent articles
Are you also going to create a "Thanks" button to be able to thank people that help and answer questions or provide other useful information in the forums? VBulletin does this and displays them for all to see under your avatar showing how many thanks you have for how many different postings. Very useful to see how credible someone is.

What are the chances you guys incorporate rep comments while you're at it? :D

Will the "most liked posts" be limited to for example 24 hours since the last rep was given to a post, or posts posted last 24 hours?

I want to like something but not give rep... but then if I think something is worth rep I want to be able to give a rep point!!!

Can you make this happen please!!!
Love this!! My members will be so stoked! They have often wanted to keep track of who reps them (so they could thank them).

The reputation is one of my favourite features of my IPB installation. However, I feel it would be a far better system if the admin/owner was able to specify or limit reputation to specific forums or apps.

For example, my website is a medical patient support community for people who have had a colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy or bowel disease issues, but as well as support forums, we have community off-topic forums. It would be great to be able to limit forums in which posts could be liked to just the support forums, so that a members reputation is based on their supportive role amongst other members, rather than their friends being able to like every post in which they post *love you dude!" in the community and thus spoil out original hope and intentions for the reputation system.

There used to be mods to do this, but after the last couple of board updates, I've been unable to find one which works, and I dont not have the knowledge to be able to create a mod to do this myself, or tweak the code to do it for my forums.

So, anyways, that is my suggestion, but I do LOVE the ideas you have coming for the rep system, and the misc enhancements in your other dev posting.

Keep up the great work on IPB and your other programs - I love you guys, esp the quality of your tech support department team!

thanks for listening. :) Its a good start

In addition to this post, will there also be an 'all time best rated content' section?
