IPS Community Enhancements and IP.Board 3.3 Note

Posted by Charles, 06 March 2012 · 6,495 views

We are happy to announce that we have made a few changes to enhance the community experience here on the IPS Community.

Access to Support Forums

Based on client feedback and the mass of good will from many helpful clients who want to assist others, we have opened up access to our support forums to both current, active license holders and those that may have a license but it is expired. As our support forums are peer-to-peer we thought this only fair. Please keep in mind that IPS Staff do not actively post in the support forums but many helpful clients do and it is a great place to get help from your fellow clients. If you ever need official support from IPS please submit a ticket in the client area.

Community Tips

We have created a new Community Administration Tips forum that we hope everyone will use to learn and share your experience. We already have some great discussion going on in this new forum and encourage you to post a topic with your own ideas. Feel free to link to your own community as a great way to promote your own community. Share your experience and learn from others!

OpenID in IP.Board 3.3

Just a quick note regarding IP.Board 3.3:

IPS is removing support for OpenID as a login method in IP.Board 3.3. While OpenID seemed to show promise several years ago it has been overtaken by other login methods. More importantly, the PHP libraries that we use to connect to OpenID have been all but abandoned by those that created them and they do not work on the latest versions of PHP. As more and more people will start upgrading their PHP versions, OpenID will start to work on fewer and fewer installs due to the incompatibles in these abandoned libraries. Therefore we will be removing support for OpenID in IP.Board 3.3.

I won't miss OpenID, I disabled it on my board after it got used to simply increase hits on other sites.
We had OpenID for all of one day.. the flood of spammers was ridiculous.
Weird.. when I commented it opened up a file download in firefox to download like.php
I love the direction you're taking. More focus on supporting the administrators through practical advice is brilliant. You have a LOT of experienced members who can do more than just share technical advice.

And, IP.Board simply looks better with every new release.
next prototypeJS :)
Wait, wait, wait....."Please keep in mind that IPS Staff do not actively post in the support forums but many helpful clients do and it is a great place to get help from your fellow clients. If you ever need official support from IPS please submit a ticket in the client area."
Was not the point of the combing support forums to get help from IPS staff and community?
If you need support and have an active license, then raise a ticket. I've found the IPS support to be exemplary and have never, not once, been unhappy with the help I have received. I am a demanding customer.

I very much like the direction IPS is taking with the forums and their products. I never looked back on my decision to go IPS over vB/XF.
I absolutely love to read those blog posts about the several improvements, tweaks and changes to IPB. It makes me feel proud to be an active license owner and it also keeps me satisfied that i spent some big bucks for a software which is actively developed. I check the official forums almost everyday for any news on the development process. IPB 3.3 is a major version, so the world is expecting something very good, which is not saying that previous versions of IPB weren't "very good" but 3.3 is expected to surpass all previous versions, given its greater importance in its release version.
Thanks Craig - appreciate it!

Shaks, thanks too. Very kind words. We all feel that 3.3 reaches a higher level of polish and professionalism than previous versions. We're thrilled with how it's turning out and can't wait to release it.
I'll miss OpenID, but it was a feature that I rarely used.
Love the admin tips forum, I wanted something like this for quite a while.
Very happy IPS changed their decision on locking down the Support Forums. As stated, most of the support was done by peers so it only seems fair past and present licensees are allowed access.

OpenID hasn't been very successful from my experience, but it would be nice if an authentication method was added to replace the removal of one. Login via Steam would be fantastic, unless it's still not possible.
Do we have Linkedin login enabled :)

Steam uses OpenID I'm afraid.
I could not get the openid login to work any way so no worries.
Never used OpenID so this is ok with me.
forget all the.. i LOVE all the new code improvement you guys have done .. specially in handleing errors and output!.. I also want to tell Terabyte that hes the best! .. IPB has improved a lot since he joined the team! .. you guys are great all of you though :)
OpenID was confusing - but they played a role like Sega Dreamcast - ahead of their time but overlooked.

I would love to be able to login with Google / Yahoo - or at least have the quick comment box require you to register and display to guests like Disqus.
I don't like the decision, that OpenID is no longer supported, now IP.Board has only support for proprietary login methods... Hope, they will include other open source login methods example HybridAuth.

@ ElectricPrismX

Google is based on OpenID.
We support Facebook, Twitter, LDAP, MSN Live all out of the box, and you can build your own custom login methods. I wouldn't say that IP.board only supports proprietary login methods - LDAP is a common open standard, for instance.
