I don't like you right now.

When I was a child I was quite a hellion. I remember, as if it were yesterday, a time when my mother said something to me that will never leave me. "Ian, I love you. But I REALLY don't like you right now."

Here come the politics:

The UN General Assembly adopted the "right to food" resolution 180 to 1. Guess who that one nation was?

QUOTE
Draft resolution XX on the right to food, approved on 24 November by a recorded vote of 180 in favour to 1 against (United States), with no abstentions, would have the Assembly reaffirm that hunger constitutes an outrage and a violation of human dignity, requiring the adoption of urgent measures at the national, regional and international level, for its elimination.  (Press Releases GA/SHC/3940 and GA/SHC/3941)

QUOTE ("UN PR 3941")
By a vote of 180 in favour to 1 against (United States) and no abstentions, the Committee also approved a resolution on the right to food, by which the Assembly would “consider it intolerable” that more than 6 million children still died every year from hunger-related illness before their fifth birthday, and that the number of undernourished people had grown to about 923 million worldwide, at the same time that the planet could produce enough food to feed 12 billion people, or twice the world’s present population. (See Annex III.)

Now, my reaction, albeit strong, was not with out pause for thought. I eventually starting considering, in a position of devil's advocacy, "Well we can't just start agreeing to all kinds of utopian ideas that don't really mean anything." But then I remembered HR 847. For those of you that don't know. This is HR 847:

QUOTE
H. Res. 847

In the House of Representatives, U. S.,

December 11, 2007.

Whereas Christmas, a holiday of great significance to Americans and many other cultures and nationalities, is celebrated annually by Christians throughout the United States and the world;
Whereas there are approximately 225,000,000 Christians in the United States, making Christianity the religion of over three-fourths of the American population;
Whereas there are approximately 2,000,000,000 Christians throughout the world, making Christianity the largest religion in the world and the religion of about one-third of the world population;
Whereas Christians and Christianity have contributed greatly to the development of western civilization;
Whereas the United States, being founded as a constitutional republic in the traditions of western civilization, finds much in its history that points observers back to its Judeo-Christian roots;
Whereas on December 25 of each calendar year, American Christians observe Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ;
Whereas for Christians, Christmas is celebrated as a recognition of God's redemption, mercy, and Grace; and
Whereas many Christians and non-Christians throughout the United States and the rest of the world, celebrate Christmas as a time to serve others: Now, therefore, be it resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;
(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;
(3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;
(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;
(5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and
(6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.

If we can get out of bed to actively mislead the country and misrepresent history so we can preserve our right to be insularly and declare it "un-American" not to say "Merry Christmas!" we can get out of bed and sign our damned name under the, "People starving is bad" non-binding UN resolution. But it's so much worse than that, we didn't just vote absent or present. We voted against this UN resolution.

USA I love you, but I really don't like you right now.
