After the new Gallery was released I was very enthusiastic to upgrade to gallery 4.0.x. After the first upgrade trial to Gallery 4.0.1 failed because the album and image rebuilding part didn't work out, I had to restore to my backup. I've had learned that rebuilding more than 30000 images and more than 4000 albums should be handled using the provided rebuild tool on the shell level. So, my plan was to try the upgrade again using shell as soon as Gallery 4.0.2 would be released.
Gallery 4.0.2 got released pretty fast and I was in for a new try knowing that I would combat the problems that occurred last time with the rebuild tool. This time, the upgrading part worked like it should be. But the structure of the albums and subalbums were quite a mess. So I ask my users politely to restructure their albums how they were supposed to look like. And then new problems started to rise. After editing albums and images, albums and images somehow just vanished. Also, the gallery slowed down the site considerably. And then white screens started to occur on global albums. In ACP I was not able to access the Album Manager because of a white screen.
My users started to get angry which I could totally understand. So, waiting until my support tickets would be resolved, was an option if the problems had been solved within 24 hours. But knowing that support has currently work loads to do, I decided it would be best to downgrade to my backup again. I am not sure if the problems only occurred because of the big amount of albums and images but I sure know that the gallery is not easy to upgrade to.
A future upgrade might come sooner or later but I am concerned about problems like white screens and page speed. If upgrading the gallery without the mentioned problems can't be realized then I will be faced to make a major decision.
What I love about the new gallery is that the new gallery layout looks very, very appealing. Also, the usability is straight forward. IPB designers have done a great job.
