OK I don't hate Christmas really. I just hate the fact that it starts in August now. Yup you read me right, august, why've I come to this conclusion? Because that's when our store started putting up Christmas stock. "Flippin' heck" I said. "It's still 4 months away" "People are strange" said my manager, as if this somehow excused large temporal incursions. At the start of this month we installed a mp3 player into the tannoy system, basically its got a 5 GB HDD and spews out music through the tannoy. I like some of it, 'Bittersweet Symphony' is one of my favourite songs. If I hear 'Santa Claus is coming to town' one more time I'll go on a large psychotic rampage tearing customers and staff alike limb from limb. I don't mind Christmas music at Christmas. There's something about large scale tackiness that can actually be quite refreshing, but its flipping halfway through November and Ive been listening to this talentless crap for 2 weeks, with no end in sight. Even 'Bittersweet Symphony' is losing its zest, as I run round the aisles screaming in pain, begging my manager for just 5 minutes of Interpol or Something Corporate. I'm sure you feel my pain.
So why is this problem happening? Its all due to the Capitalist Seasons. Yes folks, as we move from an agrarian society (one based on agriculture) to a Postmodern one (One based on services) we have new seasons. Gone are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, all related to various weather conditions and therefore their affects on crops. We now have Easter (January - April) Summer (April - July) 'Back to School' (July - August) and Christmas/New Years (August - December)
I await Easter, when I shall post a blog entry on my increasing irritation with small fluffy birds.
