(V88) Topic Prefix is a very effective method of allowing an additional way to highlight topics of interest by simply adding a prefix to them. It can have many uses for forums based on a wide variety of themes.

What is it?
A modification to allow your members to have a choice of an optional prefix on a topic, either to help a staff member or to highlight there topic content. Prefixes are definable per forum too, allowing a lot of flexibility, so you are not restricted to having them globally.

What are the benefits of using it?
With (V88) Topic Prefix you can provide your members with a way of prefixing a new topic with your choice of prefixes. This has many, many uses.

Some examples
  • A support board (you could have a set of prefixes for each product or support issue)
  • Advertising (the topic starter could select from "For Sale" / "Wanted" or perhaps a product type)

Interview with vadim88
Hello there Vadim, for the benefit of people who are not familiar with you and/or your work, please could you give us a few details about yourself and why you started coding for IP.Board.
Well my full name to who ever wonders is Vadim Gavrilov, I am 20+ years old and I currently reside in Israel (In the Middle East). The first time I ever saw IPB other IPS products (at the time there were the IP.Topsite , IP.File Manager ) was back in 2004 when I registered as a member at a PHPBB forum, I then saw that the community lacks in some features that were really important for the forum I used to browse. Quickly I suggested the forum admin to move to IPB's forums software since it was way better then the old PHPBB. We first ported to the old IPB 1.2 then I saw that there were lots of tasks that needed to be done manually and I was the only one who had some knowledge about coding and PHP so I took the job and started modifying the sources files. Without even knowing I registered at IBplanet (Invisionize today) and started asking bunch of questions like "where is this .... how do I change that..." and before I knew it I released my first modification that was called back then "Ban Page" (That actually won a reward) and from there I just continued coding more and more and just getting better. Now I have currently over 80 modification submitted free at Invisionmodding.com. Invisionize, and the official IPS Resources. Of course there are few Paid modifications that go pretty well too, And I am doing lots of custom jobs for customers now too.

You said you switched from phpBB to IP.Board 1.2, why did you decide to switch to Invision?
For some reason it seemed like it was frozen, when IPB had more and more updates, modifications and skins.

Before you started becoming a major modification creator in the IP.Board community, you must have asked a lot of questions about where to start etc. What would you say to someone who wants to start, but simply does not know where to begin?
Well the best way to start with and how I started is to just go ahead and install modifications, as much as possible. You will start getting a clue on how the system works and where is everything located. Of course you will need some PHP knowledge to begin with.

As you well know, IP.Board3 is progressing rather well, did you have any expectations about what you would like to see, and in general, how do you feel about learning a whole new PHP5 based framework?
Very exicted about that! Both from the new feaures it will have and the new PHP 5 framework. I am just hoping that two things will be addressed, firstly a fully multilingual board and second some good developers tools. From what I have read the Hooks system is a great addition but I am sure this can and will be extended in later releases. Can't say more then that right now hoping to see it really soon.

Now, obviously your modification (V88) Topic Prefix is a very popular addition to many IP.Boards, hence our reason for featuring it this month! Why did you come up a modification such as this, and do you think it has benefitted the modification community?
Well the reason I made that mod is the reason why I made almost every single mod I made so far, just because someone requested it. The majority of the modifications I wrote are based on members requests, I get insipired by just visiting the requests forum. I saw a request for that specific topic prefix mod and thought it will be a good idea and that's why I made it. I do think it benefited the community, it is the modification of the month right now isn't it? So I guess it turned out to be popular after all.

Why do you think it has benefitted the community?
There were lots of requests to be able to 'Tag' a topic with a prefix doing so will give the members a clue on what's the topic is about. If I open a topic in the support forum but that forum gives support for different products then you can 'Tag' the topic with the appropriate prefix for the product your asking support for.

To close this off (I said it'd be short). Obviously your modifications are very popular, what sort of things can we expect from you in the coming months?
I am currently doing some custom work but the next free mods I will be making will probably be for the 3.0 version, And after I will update the popular mods from 2.3.5 to 3.0 I will try to finally finish the Awards System modification that so many members requested it. Then we will see what is up next. Only time can tell.

Sounds great! Thanks for your time and good luck in the future
