Resource Author: Michael John
IP.Board Version: 2.3.x

(M23) Auto Welcome is a very effective method of welcoming new members into your community, via a choice of intial greeting methods.

What can it do?
Put simply, it allows you to do any (or all) of the following to a member of your community who has just registered:
  • Send them an introductory PM
  • Send them an introductory Email
  • Create a Welcome topic
Each of these options can be enabled or disabled to your choice of preference.

What are the benefits of using it?
First impressions count, by using Auto Welcome you have an easy method of welcoming new members into your community.
There are lots of possible uses, but some common ones include:
  • Automatically creating a welcome topic for them, where other members can greet them.
  • Sending them an introductory PM or email, perhaps linking them to either your community guidelines / rules or perhaps just a small message welcoming them into your community with a list of common frequently asked questions and where to ask if they need any help.

Interview with Michael John
Please could you describe your modification, highlighting what it does?
To put it simply it welcomes newly registered members. It will welcome them with an optional personal message, email or topic alert. From there you can further customize each pm, email or topic message, the subject / title and so on. It also has the ability to welcome members that are added manually through the Admin CP.

Please explain why you decided to come up with this modification, and why you think it has benefited the modification community. Also, please share a few examples of how it could be used?
As with most of my mods, it was something that I wanted on my own board. With so many competing boards out there, I wanted to the ability to display quickly my boards message in the crucial time a member decides to stay or go.

Example: You can setup the message to display details about your board that new members need to know such as board rules, introduction forum and some of the interesting forums.

Please give us a few details about yourself, and why you decided to start writing modifications for IP.Board
My name is Michael, not to be confused with the other Michael (FuSoYa) and I am from Australia. I started off with adding other peoples modifications, but I often wanted something changed or a mod that I wanted did not exist. One of which was a guest message for visitors, so by browsing through the IPB code and existing modifications, I managed to come up with a really simple box that only displayed to guests.

From there I started my own site, I have expanded my skills as I have learnt more and more from each IPB version. With IP.Board 3 just around the corner, I am even more excited about modding than I was when I first began.

Have you any tips for people that are interested in coding for IP.Board, but don't know where to start?
I do not know if this is the best way, but the way I started off was by installing mods that require file edits, I saw how others achieved tasks such as adding content on every page below the header or after the registration page. It was an easier learning curve than had I browsed through the IPB source code straight away.

I love this mod! Will it work on 3.0.3?

Yes.
Okay! Looks like a great mod. Where do I find it?
