Ever made a software purchase only to discover that the product doesn't function as you thought it would or worse, doesn't function at all? The problem with buying software is that once you download it (or open it if you buy it from a store), then you can't return it. Because of that, it's understandable to be cautious about making a purchase either on a new product or from someone you haven't purchased from before. For years now, companies have been offering demos or trials of their products, so that you can test things out before spending any money, so you know what you're getting.
It's a good idea not only for the buyer, but for the seller as well. The buyer gets to test something out and if they like it, they can buy the full product. The seller gets the benefit of people testing out the product, hearing of any problems or faults that need to be addressed, while knowing that some people may decide to buy the final product to continue using it after the trial period has ended.
So I've decided to give the trial concept a trial run (no pun intended). I've got a few products available for trying out that will expire at a set period of time. Once that time arrives, the products will simply not do anything but until then, it's a full operating product.
One hook has already been available for trying out: editGracePeriod
The 'editGracePeriod' hook provides a function that many people have been asking for, the option to allow members to make edits to their posts within a set period of time without the 'Edited by' tag being added to the post. After that period of time though, they want that tag to be appended to the post. The trial period for this hook ends on Jan 31st, 2011.
I've recently added trial editions of restrictedReplyFunction and a new hook named hideStatsBar.
'restrictedReplyFunction' allows you to select certain forums where members can see and read topics made by other members, but they can't reply to those topics. This overrides the built in option that allows a member to reply to others topics, because it allows you to select which forums to disable that privilege.
'hideStatsBar' simply hides the stats bar located on the Board Index from guests. This is the bard that gives you links to view top posters, forum leaders, etc.
The trial period for both of these hooks ends on Feb 28th, 2011. During this time, the 'restrictedReplyFunction' hook is being offered at a discount. Once the trial period ends, the price will return to normal.
