The Social Groups application allows for the creation of special interest oriented groups on your website. The basic idea behind the app is very similar to the groups system on Facebook but it expands upon the idea to provide more features than a simple Facebook group page. This app is perfect for any community where there are multiple sub-interest groups within the site. This app will facilitate the creation of a tighter knit community through the creation of more intimate and specialized interactions. It allows for sites with 10,000s of members to provide a specialized niche for each member without crowding the site. So whether you are a gaming clan trying to organized separate factions or a large community centered around a hobby (cars) or an educational focus (university), you can serve the needs of your members' unique interests with this app.

Noteworthy Features
  • Member Controlled - Group creation and administration is done by normal members, so there is no need for you to constantly intervene to keep the groups running smoothly.
  • Group Privacy - There are three different privacy levels (Public, Private, and Hidden) which will let the groups to be created for a range of activities. From a public group for your own personal fan club to a maximum-security hidden group for you to plan your evil plot to take over the world.
  • Group Customization - Allows groups to feel a little bit more like home by providing the ability for custom logos and banners.
  • Invitations - Want to show off your fancy new group to all of your friends? You can send them all an invite to make sure they don't miss it!
  • Mass Messaging - Need to get a message out to all of the members of your group quickly? Well you now can send them all a Mass Private Message to ensure that they are aware of all of the happenings within your group.
  • Dedicated Forum - Each time a group is added a matching forum is also created. Group Admins will be able to control  permissions for this forum based on whether or not you are a member of the group. You can control how group forums appear in the forum index.  Each group forum features the group's sidebar navigation and personlized header.
  • Group News - Groups will be able to add news topics to their group "portal" to make sure the latest happenings are always visible to their members.
  • Member Control - Group admins will be able to control each member's rank within the group (Admin, Moderator, Member). They can also ban those pesky troublemakers from their group to keep things civilized.

Hope you will blog about this latest bit of news:

EDIT: I wanted to let you all know that I just obtained a vB database so I can make a converter for vB Social Groups to this application!

As soon as I have it done, I am sure I will release a blog about it. It may take some time since there is no documentation about writing converters in IPB's app, so I will basically have to guess and check!
Congrats on reaching Beta!
Nice module.
Any link demo?
Yea, you can look at the demo here.
Looks very very good
looks really good :)
I'll be watching this one, but not making any moves until after 3.2.
I will be trying to get this app updated to work with 3.2 before IPB 3.2 is out of the Beta stage, so it should be done before you update to 3.2. I will probably post another blog entry at that point.
Very cool rsyvarth
Good work. Well done on taking up the mantle and coming up with something people can see and touch ...

Good luck with the project.
Picking this one up as soon as I upgrade to 3.2 :)
Wow, this actually looks very nice! Good work!

I'll be watching this one, but not making any moves until after 3.2.

Ditto on that!
Same here re 3.2, really looking forward to this
Way overpriced, in my opinion. IP.Board = $150. This = $50? No thanks...I would love to purchase this but at a much lower price.

If you figure out how many hours it takes to develop a mature and full featured app like this one, $50 is a pittance! It's a shame more developers aren't releasing apps like this as well as charging these rates. This app isn't a few lines of code that some developer clobbered together in two hours and isn't worth the $5 they're charging.
I can guarantee that IP.Board has more than triple the code and is only triple the price. It's not like you're only going to sell one copy of the modification.
