I've started the long process of creating my short film, which I will be working on for the next 6 months. My new term started on Monday, and my mentor is Melanie Cordan, who has worked as a Senior Animator on LOTR, Toy Story 2, Shrek, Madagascar and is currently working on Shrek 3 and Over The Hedge.
As I explained in my previous entry, the first 3 months will be pre-production and the last 3 will be animation. I've got to come up with story ideas over the next 2 weeks which I will then be pitching to my class live (yes, the prospect of having to pitch a story to other people scares the crap out of me!).
Our film is going to be between 30 seconds and a minute long. It doesn't sound much, but it's a lot of work. Generally the best thing to do for a short film of that length is a gag. A set up and an outcome. Drama is too difficult to sell in just 30 seconds, so I've been told.
I have a couple of basic ideas that I need to flesh out; I'll discuss those next week perhaps. The point of this entry is to get some feedback from anyone that reads this. Have you seen a funny situation recently? Maybe you were sitting on a train and someone was having trouble reading a paper, or maybe you were walking down the street and someone did something you thought was funny. If you can think of anything, let me know, it might help me come up with some other ideas (I've been struggling so far!).
By the way, I got a B for my final assignment last week which I'm pretty pleased with!
