Story time!

Posted by Rikki, 06 April 2006 · 47 views

I've started the long process of creating my short film, which I will be working on for the next 6 months. My new term started on Monday, and my mentor is Melanie Cordan, who has worked as a Senior Animator on LOTR, Toy Story 2, Shrek, Madagascar and is currently working on Shrek 3 and Over The Hedge.

As I explained in my previous entry, the first 3 months will be pre-production and the last 3 will be animation. I've got to come up with story ideas over the next 2 weeks which I will then be pitching to my class live (yes, the prospect of having to pitch a story to other people scares the crap out of me!).

Our film is going to be between 30 seconds and a minute long. It doesn't sound much, but it's a lot of work. Generally the best thing to do for a short film of that length is a gag. A set up and an outcome. Drama is too difficult to sell in just 30 seconds, so I've been told.

I have a couple of basic ideas that I need to flesh out; I'll discuss those next week perhaps. The point of this entry is to get some feedback from anyone that reads this. Have you seen a funny situation recently? Maybe you were sitting on a train and someone was having trouble reading a paper, or maybe you were walking down the street and someone did something you thought was funny. If you can think of anything, let me know, it might help me come up with some other ideas (I've been struggling so far!).

By the way, I got a B for my final assignment last week which I'm pretty pleased with!

I was drinking milk and a guy told a joke and I snorted and the milk sprayed up and out over my face. It was funny. lol   Theres a Shrek 3? o_O
Congratulations on the "B" Rikki, I really thought you did a fantastic job on that piece.  As for a comedy sketch, I was out to dinner last weekend with friends and at the table next to us, there was a couple who must have been on a first date or something close as they were both extremely nervous tongue.gif .   They drop their utensils, knocked over a drink and at one point when she got up she must have caught the tablecloth as she started to take everything with her  laughing.gif but caught it on time.  Don't know if that'll help any but it was quite funny.  tongue.gif
I heard a funny joke, but nothing sketchy.

Just watch you've been framed next time it's on tongue.gif
Hehe, funny you should say that. I watched Kirsty's Home Videos for exactly that reason last night.

I've got a couple of ideas that I'll blog about this week sometime original.gif
