Well, I am there now! Posted Oct 9th, 05
The University is divided into colleges, which are the social aspect of the university, and for most of us, its where we live. On Sunday I moved into Collingwood College, Room H6C, which means Hexham block, Level 6, Room C, its actually only two floors up, but I think its to keep consistancy with the other blocks.
The college is divided into tutor groups, which dont seem to have a particular purpose, and the tutor groups are based on your floor, so all 10 people on my floor are my tutor group (we all share two toilets, a pantry and two showers, there is a sink in each room, food is all included and cooked for us) so its nice how we get to make friends with our floor pretty quick, although Id met most of them before the "tutor meal" on Sunday, which was the first time we met out tutor, we were served the food for once and there was free wine, the food is OK, but the kitchen staff are really strict! You can only have a certain number of things, and only certain combinations, for example you cant have a cold meal and a desert from the warm section, and you cant have fruit and a yogurt for breakfast.
On Monday I went to a department meeting, where there was a two hour talk about Computer Science, for the first year, only four of the six modules are computer science, so we have to choose the other two modules, I chose an Introduction to Management (from the business and economics department) and Technology for the modern world (from the engineering department) Yesturday involved registration, going to the other departments to get the modules signed up, I met up witha guy from the course at 9am, and we talked about the modules, and I decided on my two, once Id checked they wouldnt clash and he chose the same, he was going to do maths as opposed to the engineering one, but the engineering one is highly recommended as a very easy module.
So, we went to engineering, for our computer science photo, went to computer science to find open access IT rooms, were redirected to ITS which was through the maths building, we checked the course clashes, and went back to engineering to register for that module, we went to the business park which is right at one end of the university, somewhat past my college, only to be told to go to Elvet Riverside, the building in the city centre by the DSU, so we went there via my room for a drink, and queued for about one and a half to two hours for the registration, then we got our registration card stamped, and then waited in a three and a hlaf hour queue to get our campus cards, which incidently is the queue Emma is in right now, hahaha! With the campus card, I now have internet access in my room! WOOHOOO
Today, I was awoken at 7.40 by the firedrill we were promised, which we were told we had to be out of the building in three minutes or we do it again, thankfully all went well. We then had breakfast, and had a college photograph taken which took a while. Then at about half 10 was our Matriculation ceremony at the cathederal, which was very boring, then I returned to sort my room out, shower, and go on the internet. I think Ill post some room pics very soon!
TTFN.
