Time for a little update on the next Blog version's progress.
I have made a small change on how the RSS feeds work. Currently when guest viewing is disabled; RSS feeds will not work in most RSS readers (because they access the feed as guests). This could cause some confusion. I have added an Admin option to override guest permissions for RSS feeds. This means that even when guests cannot view the Blogs, the RSS feed will still work. This means that guests are able to view entries thru the RSS feed. I also changed the feed so that if there are any error messages; these are displayed in the feed itself.
Now for a bigger change. The next version will feature the pinging of popular Blog tracker services (like Technorati and Weblogs.com) on new entries. The user will be able to select which services will be pinged. These pings inform these services that your Blog has been updated.
Technically it is implemented using a task in the task manager. This is to prevent any delays when posting and to be able to retry a ping if it fails for some reason. Currently it will try to ping 5 times with 30 minutes intervalles before it 'gives up'.
On the user side of things; I have re-arranged the Blog settings slightly. Below you can see the result for the new 'Trackback & Pings' tab.

As with most features of the Blog; the pinging and trackbacks can be shut off from the AdminCP.
