You have been transfered

I have not been updating my Blog a lot lately, so it is about time I let you know what is going on.

On the Blog side of things I am still working on some of the big changes I had in mind. I do not have anything to show yet. I can tell that the way the content of the Blog is managed will change. I am still in the proces of finding the best way to do what I have in mind.
Some small changes have been made and I have been keeping up with some bugfixes.

On a different note, I have been working a lot on the DB Transfer Tool I originally made a long time ago. The tool really needed some updating. I have had a couple of huge export files I could use to improve the tool. I found out that the tool could not handle files larger then 2Gb and that the export on large tables became extremely slow (if it did not time out). Last but not least the tool had some problems with specific content in the backup (on rare occasions it would halt).

Needless to say I was able to address these issues. A small list:
  • An improved query creation routine that no longer halts in specific cases.
  • It will now skip tables in the backup file that are not in the database (mods).
  • It will now skip fields in the backup file that are not in the table (mods).
  • Query timeout protection on import.
  • Drastically improved the speed of the export (using less memory too).
  • The tool can now handle very large databases (over 2Gb in size) by splitting the export files in chunks.
  • Several bugfixes where the tool failed to report it's errors.
I am quite happy with the end result. The tool can be very handy in moving data over from one server to another or moving it from one database type to another (supports MySQL, MSSQL and Oracle).

I am still thinking about releasing it on IPSBeyond, but I have not decided yet. It is likely that I will change the interface a bit too.

On a personal note; I have just ordered myself a new laptop (Dell XPS M1710). The one I had kept crashing and it was about time for a new one. I can't wait for it to arrive.

I really do hope you release the tool at IPSB -- hopefully with some good documentation too. Really looking forward to hearing more about the blog development.  Nice choice of laptop. Enjoy it! (post some pics! tongue.gif)
I'd love to have that! My staff has been telling me I should move servers for a long time. But our database is too big and complex to just pick up and move like that. if we had that we could move with no problem.
I ordered same one a month ago and it is a good machine...
