One-third of addicts are gamers

This morning I heard on the news that one-third of the addicts being treatened in The Netherlands are actually game-addicts. And they report that this is the fastest growing group. The major problems these addicts face is the lack of eating and sleeping.

When I hear such a news-item is generally wonder why they report this now. Usually it means they want to start a discussion about gaming in general and the effects it has on the public. I believe that it is a growing problem, but I think the problem is not games per se. It is the way we use computers and the internet as a whole.

Computers are now all interconnected and we use them as a way to communicate with eachother. Many people have alternate identities on the internet. In fact we communicate with a lot of people we don't even know in real life. This is no different in gaming.

So the problem we face is how to coop with the 'two worlds'. I have answered this question for myself. Others will have different solutions.

Children growing up have to find a modus in this as well. An extra problem there is that a lot of parents do not understand the internet and the way it is being used nowadays. We see this in increasing reports of children being abused via Messenger and now also an increasing number of gaming addicts.

To conclude; we are not facing new problems. What we are facing is another example of the generation-gap.

There is no excuse for kids being addicted to games (and personally, I don't believe it is a true addiction, like drinking, except in a few very rare cases). If a parent lets a kid sit in front of a games console - or TV or computer - for that much time each day, there's a bigger problem than the games.
