Sinterklaas

Posted by , 01 December 2004 · 13 views

It's the period of the year again where we celebrate 'Sinterklaas' in the Netherlands.

Sinterklaas is kinda like Santaclaus (he too gives presents to kids and he too has a beard) and his helpers are called 'Zwarte Pieten' (I'll call them black Joe's in English). On the 5th of december kids get presents from Sinterklaas and in the weeks before they can place their shoe for the smaller presents. The grown ups usually write eachother a short poëm with a gift (these can be really funny too)

Anyway why a Blog entry about Sinterklaas? I of all people was not so fond of the man. I always prefered Christmas. But this all changed when my son was born...

O joy, I am now looking forward to the event. It is excellent when you have kids. They believe with all their heart and the can get really anxious. My boy (4 years old now) is talking about Sinterklaas all year long. He has a book about him and he want us to read in it during the year. We allways tell him that we will read it when Sinterklaas is in the country. So you can guess what book I read nowadays wink.gif

The other day my son placed his shoe together with my daughter and my wife. Obviously he got a present next day (I wonder how Sinterklaas does that rolleyes.gif ). So he woke me up and pulled me downstairs to see if he got anything from Sinterklaas. He got all excited. I played the beaten man by saying that I forgot to place my shoe...
The next day I got home to find my shoe standing in the room. My son immediatly ran to me and explained he placed it there so I wouldn't forget. Those are the times you really love your kids.

I can't wait for december 5th where the big presents get rollen in. The look in my son's eyes is priceless (even tho I own a VISA tongue.gif )

So all you Dutch people out here... Enjoy! For everyone else, Christmas is ok too wink.gif

I hope you enjoy it with your children.  They have such a special way of showing us things through their wide eyed innocence.  It's almost magical,  wub.gif  although the problem is they grow up way too fast.  Happy Holidays to you!
I can't wait to share Christmas with my children when they arrive.
