IP.Board 3.2.0: New Photo Editor

Posted by Matt, 14 February 2011 · 3,467 views

One of our main goals for IP.Board 3.2.0 is to streamline the interface and make it easier to work with. We're also taking full advantage of modern techniques to ensure that IP.Board has more of an application feel by eliminating page reloads and using rich web technologies.

We've revamped the photo editor to make it easier and simpler to use. The first thing you'll notice is that if you've connected your forum account to Twitter and/or Facebook, you can quickly select to synchronise your photo with the service on the same page.

We're also using square cropped images for the user's photo for a more uniform feel and you can adjust the crop viewport if the default center crop doesn't catch all the detail.

Here's the new photo editor complete with all the options available to me for my photo.

After uploading a new custom image, I can quickly re-crop it to better capture the relevant portion of the photograph.

And finally, here's a little video of it in action!

We really hope you enjoy this new interface and we're sure it'll make changing your photo an easier and more pleasant experience!

I would say "great" if square-photographs wouldn't look so stupid. There's a reason why photos are rectangular and no squares! :(
Wow that is just awesome! :D Great work!
very nice :)
I love how easy and how modern it looks. Thank you!

Ah now, come on. Almost all modern websites use a square thumb for your personal photo.

*And* you can re-crop the area you want to choose.

My site isn't like almost all ;) If it was like almost all people would register elsewhere!

And well, even if god was for square thumbs that wouldn't change my personal opinion.

Ya, the re-crop thing is okay, but I can do that in Gimp, Photoshop or even paint too ;)

Again: Opinions are different and this is good!

<br><br>Just to point out facebook uses portrait photos on your profile :P. <br><br>P.S. You're not camera shy :P *cough* poser *cough*<br><br>P.P.S Fix the post parser, these html tags in posts have been showing up a lot lately on these forums. <br>
This is great! My users are for the most part, not savvy enough to edit photos on their own to make a good looking thumb.

Here's a question.. can the crop area be resized? Say they just want to get a crop of their head in a large photo?
+1 :)

Luuve it :D :thumbsup::thumbsup:
Very awesome! How does it resize photos though?
Awesome... :)
Very nice!
Can you select an image from your new fabulous gallery app? ;)
Looks good. :)

Does it physically resize the image that is stored on the server, or just visually resize what is displayed?

i.e. If I upload a 1.5MB (1024x768) image for use as my avatar/photo, will it be stored as a 1.5MB file on my server?

Cheers,
Shaun :D
I notice that "Avatar" isn't even a profile option anymore. Oh well, better than having both and using each one willy-nilly in various places.

How will the new 3.2 treat avatars in upgrades from previous versions? Will users that have both uploaded be allowed to choose which image they want to keep? Will 3.2 automatically turn a member's avatar into their photo if the member doesn't have a photo already uploaded?
And like soniceffect said, can you use a photo you've uploaded to the Gallery as your photo?
Very nice.

The only problem is users never seem to find this area. They never seem to spot the down arrow by their name.

Interesting... no more Avatars?
Moo
The image is uploaded then resized and saved, so the actual file on your server is only around 20k or so (200x400 max). It also builds the square thumb. The square thumb is used around the site (comments, avatar, etc) whereas the full size is used on the actual profile page.

Yes, we are "merging" avatars and photos in 3.2 and choosing to use the "Photo" labelling as we feel that more users relate tot his over 'avatar' which is starting to become an anachronism.

As for the upgrade process, we haven't fully decided what we're going to do. The current thought is to allow the admin to select which to "keep" during the upgrade process.
