IP.Gallery 5.0: More Navigation Changes

While we discussed some of the basic core navigational changes in IP.Gallery 5.0 already (and yes, we've heard your feedback on those changes!), we have implemented some other changes to enhance consistency and bring IP.Gallery into the modern world wide web. Some of these changes are basic on the surface, but will help to ensure the interface remains consistent throughout the application, in third party applications, and in future features we may add, while some of the changes represent an entirely new way to use the software.

Image Navigation
When you enter into a category or album that has a listing of images, you see each image and can click into them one by one to view the full-sized image and some further details. This is simple and intuitive enough, but a little...boring. With today's web, we can enhance this a bit, so we've done so.

When you are viewing a listing of images and click onto an image, it will now open in a lightbox and most of the image details will be presented to the user. You can navigate through the images in the listing with next and previous buttons, easily allowing you to view all of the images on the page without ever leaving the page itself. The functionality itself is handled by javascript (and AJAX requests), but the links are good old-fashioned links to the full image details page, so you don't have to worry about search engine spiders being able to navigate through the software. To them, the navigation will work as it always has.

The AJAX responses are cached to save resources while the user is still viewing the page (if the user navigates to an image they've already loaded, it pops up instantly).

Here is a quick video demonstrating this new change. Note that you can still access the full image details page by clicking the caption in the lightbox (or through any other normal browser means, such as opening the link in a new tab, or dragging the image itself to your address bar in your browser).

Album Changes
In IP.Gallery 5.0, you will no longer be able to create sub-albums. Sub-categories are still supported, however albums themselves can only be placed within a category, not within another album. The upgrader routine will move sub-albums to the nearest category that allows album creation (or to the special Member's Gallery if a suitable category cannot be found). Similarly, private and friend-only albums are only allowed within the special Member's Gallery. These changes represent necessary deviations from past versions to allow IP.Gallery to scale effectively as the site becomes larger. One of the primary issues faced in past versions was resource consumption as the number of albums on the site grows - this will no longer be an issue with specific rules in place that prevent complex hierarchy challenges.

Member's Gallery
The special Member's Gallery category is the only category that allows friend-only and private album creation. It is designed as a category that members can create any type of album they want within (subject to the per-group restrictions the administrator has defined), and includes a special option to allow you to determine how to present the contents of this category.

The special Member's Gallery allows the administrator to determine if the category will display albums, images or individual members. When you display albums, the category works like any other category that allows album creation. This is the default setting. When you display images, all images within all albums in the category (that you have permission to view) are displayed, just as if the category allowed direct image submissions. To the end user, they will be looking at an image listing, and will be unaware that the images are coming from albums within the category (although this is noted in both the lightbox popup and on the full image details page in the right hand information block).

When you choose to show members instead, however, all members who have submitted an album to the special Member's Gallery are displayed, and clicking on the member will show that user's detail page (which in turn will list their albums and image submissions). For sites who wish to group by member within the category, this option allows you to do that, similar to earlier versions of Gallery. The last 10 images the member has uploaded into an album within this category will also be displayed.

You will note there is a "Show Me" dropdown button at the top right. Members can override the administrator-defined default if they prefer to view the listing differently (e.g. if they just wish to see a stream of images), and their preference is stored in a cookie so that it is remembered if they leave the page and come back.

And still more
We have yet more to announce for IP.Gallery 5.0 and hope you are enjoying the updates. We are taking all feedback in and are looking forward to being able to show you the new release as soon as possible.

Image Navigation with lightbox - this is the feature that I'm looking for past 18 months from IPS Inc.!

I understand you guys are doing all you can to get a better and more modern product. However, I'm not too keen on the album changes (though I understand your reasons), but even less about restricting private albums to a special category. I have problems as it is trying to explain my members how and where to create an album. So, if I understand correctly, when editing an album by making it private, will we have to change category too?

Anyway, I'm sure I'll have to live with the changes whether they suit my site or not. There's only one thing I hope, and that's an easy to access image link that we could copy and paste on forums posts, as on my site the gallery is used by many as a source to link images from.

It will be impossible to create subalbums.. Our gallery of the world architecture has several levels of depth of subalbums and thousands of image. The projects are located within subalbums so that each can easily locate the project. One can find the Egyptian pyramids under Africa/Egypt/Cairo. At the moment I am not able to imagine what your proposal of your upgrade process will do. I hope the pyramids will not be moved to an album next to an Eiffel Tower?

1. Image Navigation - The link don’t seem to work.
2. Album Changes – With the changing explain here in the post; I still finding it hard to grasp. Could you give an example picture of how this is going to work please? My main concern is will there be a way for a viewer to see a members’ album from within Gallery 5 and not have to do to the user’s page to see what they have? Meaning not looking at everybody else’s albums but a specific user that they are looking for. Just an option do to that would be great.
2A. Would it be okay to make it a option to allow sub-albums and not a must?
3. Member's Gallery - Could you give more examples in the picture to show it more than just one user please?

Over all it looks great.

I'm not honestly sure how I like the idea of using the lightbox everywhere.

One of my big questions here is.. what about comments? Will you still be able to read and write comments in the lightbox at the very least? Will this feature be toggable at all by the admin (can the admin use the "old fashioned" method if he still wants)?

I like that layout for the thumbs each album. I will renew my subscription to the gallery if I'll see really some nice implementation like that (in the beginning that was the thumb, not squared).

Lightbox is good, but hopefully the styling will be changed. At the moment it looks draft having the standard ips boxes around the next and previous arrows.

The lightbox needs to be tweakable to really round this out well... comments on/off, background colour/opacity, etc..

1) The link is working just fine for me?

2) Albums will be listed within categories as they are now (except now they are "global albums"). You can also see all of a member's albums from their profile page, or from their Gallery page. Within the member's gallery, you can group albums by member so that the member is listed (instead of the individual albums). In essence, there are many multiple ways to see all albums by member as a result.

2a) No

3) It's just an example screenshot. You'll see more details about the product prior to release, as well as seeing it online here, and the images are subject to change anyways.

We will evaluate feedback on the functionality when clients can actually test and see the product. It's hard to get reliable good feedback when no one has even seen how it works yet. :)

As of right now comments do not show within the lightbox (I haven't investigated the logistics of making that happen - the comments javascript was never designed to load inline via ajax like that so I'm not positive it will work 100%). It's something we can look into at some point, however.

Cropped thumbnails are no longer necessary.

As always, it's fully skinnable. :) Further, the skinner has not had a chance to look at Gallery 5 yet, so he may make changes before release, and our internal QA, alpha testers, focus group and client base as a whole has not had a chance to look at or test the software.

We're a bit premature in judging the styling just yet, which is one reason it's difficult to provide screenshots in these blog entries. ;) The look may change drastically prior to release.

Like I've suggested many times before.. it's obvious many clients want many different things.

I know it's a very generic suggestion, but I think it's always good to give the admins as much control over how their gallery will operate as possible.

Make it configurable, where it can be fine tuned to work for various types of communities.. within reason.

I'm curious if the new solution can handle subscription based category.

For example.. let's say I have an adult subscription. Everyone that is a member can upload and view everything in the Adult Category. No one wants any of the adult images under the Adult Category to show up as a random or latest uploaded photos category. The desire is to only see the adult photos if you browse to the adult category.

Anyway this is going to be possible with Gallery 5.0? Right now, not so good.

In previous blogs, IP.G5 was sounding like the gallery IP.G4 should have been.... but then this blog came along.

Do not like these changes one bit. Taking away the ability for members to organise their photo's into their own albums is just a silly move IMHO.

Looks like I will have to go looking for alternate gallery system after all.

Suggestion though, you need to look at changing the layout of elements in the lightbox... current layout is bad.

In my community there are members traveling for long distances with their motorcycle and for better organizing they are adding an album for example "My trip around the world and they structure their pictures in subalbums per countries they visited.

Now this feature is a must have for me.. and you are taking it out in the next release. Please, consider leaving it as it is!

------------------------------------

If my opinion above wasn't convincing enough, take it like this:

I have been traveling for some time and i have 500 pictures to upload from my trip.
I will never ever ever rename the pictures or add descriptions to them: where they were taken, in what circumstances.. etc. I simply want to make them visible to other members and also let them understand something from them without requiring a consistent effort from me (renaming pictures, adding descriptions..etc)

SO, i choose to create subalbums in my main trip album with pictures from countries visited, or based on activities.. or whatever other structuring i find useful

2) I answered all your questions best I can see? I'm not sure what you mean by an example of how this will work. It would work like any other categorical structure.

2a) There is a reason we removed this capability. We did not remove subalbums simply because we thought it would be a nice change. :) Adding an option to continue using them completely undermines the removal of the feature, as we still have to support it if the functionality is built into the software.

We are going to evaluate the controls and options needed once users get to actually see and test the software. :) I'd rather not blindly through in dozens of options or change massive functionality when no one has even seen or used the new version yet, as video-based impressions are not always accurate or show the full picture.

That said, we will consider an option if our client base feels it is necessary.

at last! we shall be able to browse the pictures!

Grouping and browsing the pictures is essential, and the slide show that reloads the page each time is just the worst type of navigation for browsing 10000 of pics.

Please tell me how I can set the image navigation to display as such in the video, http://screencast.com/t/5yMrkqTe

I really like how you view images in an album using the top arrows as opposed to the way it works. I for one do not like the "SideLeft", "SideRight" and "Stripless" png images and would really benefit from this feature. I have the latest version installed but cannot find how to toggle the navigation feature to display the way it does in the video. Please let me know.

Thanks.
