JLogica new apps

You may have noticed that JLogica has suddenly acquired a number of applications notably Shoutbox & Links I am still digesting all of the code and bits'n'pieces and trying to organise myself with all of the stuff so be patient with me. I am also swapping back to Tracker after talking to stoo2000 about where Tracker is going so I will need to move all of my issues from MatisBT into Tracker (joy).

Now where the various applications are going to end up I don't know yet the terms of usage of the previous owners may not fit well with what I have planned moving forward. I will try and be fair but as the old saying goes you can not please everyone and I have no doubt that no matter what is done someone will have their nose out of joint. But the reality is that if you want these application to grow, ie features, bug fixes, upgrades for new ipBoard releases & support then you need to assess what the benefit is of having active development. It is quite likely that I will look at some of the work being contracted and that costs money the old TANSTAAFL comes into play.

Short term nothing much dramatic will happen as I am working on a major new project, I will be tinkering with my portfolio to have a break from serious coding and yes I consider what I do with applications to be tinkering. One thing is that some of the free applications are being put onto github Shoutbox and DB Customisation Manager are already there with the following general 'rules';

Forking and usage

You may: [*]Fork the application for your own use you may not distribute modified files [*]Pick up an issue from the Tracker and fix, make code available for merging
You must: [*]Changes must be made available for me to browse and incorporate (or not) here on GitHub
You may NOT: [*]You are not permitted to make any money from the application, it is a free after all! [*]Distribute any version/file [*]Purport that changes made by you are from me
Hopefully things will thrive, but we shall see won't we?

Nice that you're taking over those apps.
So, the big project that you mentioned, is it ipb related?

No it is a commercial system coding from start to finish ... estimates of usage are like Facebook. Will be aws based worldwide. Just Australia the projection is 100k paid users (on a 3% penetration rate), already have a patent application for one of the new technology widgets we have invented. It is really mind numbingly exciting.

Thanks for taking over Links. Having a decent links system is a requirement for any decent site / forum.

That sounds pretty big indeed!

Your blog sounds interesting, awaiting what you are doing in future - may I ask what happened to Michael?

That why I'm asking.

Give him a while to get used to the package - I am sure that he will support all those who paid money to Brandon before he vanished. Me included.

The pay once support forever model for anything other than something trivial just doesn't work. I do not expect people to give me updates/support forever and it is hugely naive to think that it is a viable model.

That being said, I also don't like the pay through the nose approach, in any case there is no point worrying about it as I am not going to make any long-term decisions until (probably) early next year.

Indeed. In its lifetime as a $20 set price, Links Directory receieved a number of updates (one of which was packed full of additional features). I originally thought this was a good model as I didn't want to charge much for the product, even though I had written it from scratch and maintained it since the IPB 3.0 beta days as a free application. In all fairness, the $20 was nothing compared to what you received, especially if you benefited from the few included updates. If you expect great support and great development then I agree with JLogica, unless the developer is doing it in his free time and/or out of the kindness of his heart, the current model does not work. Even so, it may not work for very long as in my case. If you want further proof you can look at the many free or practically free mods out there and how they've been neglected.

I hope JLogica brings fresh ideas and new vigor to the app, and I believe he will :-)

Really? To my see, you are another of those people who don't let facts get in the way of inaccurate assertions.

Whether or not its a true assertion, what does it even matter? That logic just completely hurts my head. Do you expect a mechanic to fix your car for no charge? Go to the grocery store and walk out without paying for your groceries? What makes a developer any different from any other profession where services or goods are exchanged for currency? It's how our entire world has worked for a very long time.

Common sense, some of these people already paid for the app once, the full price asked by you Brandon. They are NOT ripping anyone off and your analogies are entirely off and incorrect. It's not anyone's fault you done whatever with the app, it is their right to know however did you take care of the previous customers that put food on your table or leave them out to hang like you did for support...

You made the price for your app, not the customer. stop beating the customer over the head over your pricing and support choices.

Beings there was no official announcement links was taken over and you didn't even have the courtesy to tell the people who purchased it or your intentions I'd say you've come out ok so far. Let's just hope since Jlogica made the I'm a tinkerer comment the price and support of the product reflect the level of support that will be given and hope he's more honest about what support will be available.

Are you not replying to my 'official' announcement?

I am pretty unamused by the comments made here that seem to indicate that no consideration will be given to my track record with other items I support or that reality when it comes to long term upgrade/support for a software product is relevant.

You are entitled, as is everyone, to have an opinion. I am entitled to mine as well. It is my opinion that the pay once support forever model is flawed for anything other than a trivial application. In your own interests you want active development/support.

I don't remember giving you any money JLogica for links, so I expected a announcement from whom I give my money too. Simple..

Not dis-agreeing on this nor did I say I was. That's of course your choice. I haven't purchased anything from you so as far as your track record goes I can't say not having dealt with you. I can and did say however since you stated this is just tinkering I hope the level of support is up to par for whatever the price is.

My tinkering is probably more advanced than most professional coding ...

Expectations are the same as opinions.

Maybe on some distorted level that's true however normally when someone purchases something they want to know what to expect. Differs greatly from an opinion when your shelling out money.

Expectations are the same as opinions.

Some notice from the person directly responsible for the application either before or at the time of the project exchange would have been nice, considering it's a paid product.

Looking at the new guy's defensive attitude, I suspect our use of Links will be discontinued if 4.0 isn't compatible with IP.Board 3.4.

I am not a robot ... if I was rude you would be complaining about my aggressive attitude!

As I use all of the applications that I have taken over you can be pretty sure I will want them to run on the latest ipBoard suite.

Times change and a new developer now has the job of upgrading Links. Are you expecting him to do it for free? If so, you're both unreasonable and naive.

You're also extremely rude. You've thus far "Liked" every post critical of the handover or any suggestion that the developer should do this upgrade free of charge and then you comment about the developer's attitude. It is your attitude that is the problem here, not the developer's. Perhaps, as a suggestion, you should try "asking" the developer about their plans and watching the support topic. You may actually find something to your liking.

Some of you are so naive! JLogica has a proven track record of not only introducing new apps, but taking on apps and improving them. He does the latter in a manner that doesn't "rock the boat". As we all know change can be scary, though he has an aptitude to deliver quality products at an affordable price. The time and effort he dedicates to his work deserves recognition via a monetary value, even on an ongoing basis. Furthermore his professionalism in what he delivers, is unsurpassed.

I have followed many of his developments, and the only and slight criticism I can make, is the very occasional defensive attitude to idiots who criticise his work and efforts to provide products. Quite frankly I don't blame him, with which in hindsight I retract that comment!

Keep up the great work. I look forward to the Marketplace being improved 10 fold :)

Just curious, but are you legally allowed to not honour the agreement that everyone has having purchased links? i.e. the purchase of it entitles the purchaser to unlimited upgrades?

I am sure however the product will now see the love it deserves and be a great asset.
