I also got an EX0 error on a fresh install attempt...after passing all requirements of the first step

Hmm. Thing is, some of the downloads would be 'paid' items . I want to protect the files by only allowing access from the download button.  So it seems the only way to do that is store on the dedicated server...right?
  3. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: Downloads and FTP

In v3, I had an issue with using FTP for the 'Downloads' application...my FTP credentials were shown in the url.   How has this been addressed in v4?
My scenario is running the site on a dedicated server, but storing the download content on a shared server via FTP.
  4. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: Modify 3.4 Now or After 4.0 Is Released?

I notice Ehren from IPBFocus is offering upgrades to many of his themes. He seems to working very hard.

I also own a 3.x license, and decided not to launch my site until 4.0. Its a tough decision, but I'll suffer a while for future sanity. I don't like tinkering on the server side much.

I've tried this upgrader, but I keep getting permission errors even after changing permissions. I also checked the permission in ACP, all looks fine.

BTW, there are commercial products in SimpleScript, Fantastico, AMPPS, and other similar script managers.

CPanel and Plesk can be configured with a SimpleScript (http://www.simplescripts.com/) option that seamlessly installs and updates with minimal effort. I've used this for wordperss, Joomla, and other forum software. What are the prospects of IPB getting on that list?
  7. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: Same File In Multiple Categories

ip.downloads already needs a huge change to its code...might as well add this functionality along the way.
  8. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: Browsing the Catalog (currently a pain)

Perhaps a static category list with a jquery sub list that is scrollable and updates more when reaching the bottom? Selecting a particular product could explode its details rather than loading a new page outside the list. That's a concept tha comes to mind.

    Anything but flash!

I just posted a similar thread about the challenges users face when going to large catalogs. It's discouraging to many visitors
  10. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: Browsing the Catalog (currently a pain)

I only have 26 files in my downloads app, but it seems to be a pain for visitors to navigate through the catalog. My fear is that when I reach 100 files, no one will bother to explore them all. When I'm in a file (like http://goo.gl/o1UjO ), there is no option to got to "next" or "previous" file. More clicks than desired are necessary to display a few files. Has this been a discussion among developers?

I'd like to see this post promoted to a FAQ for iP.Content
  12. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: let search include download tags

Please add this as an option. Here's an example through my challenge:
U have music loops for download, and a download file can span multiple styles, so instead of restricting to category, I let users add tags. When someone wants some slow paced loops, they can type "slow" and get all related files. Also there are so many genres I don't want users to get lost in the category list. Instead they can type rock, fusion, jazz, or whatever the author used as a tag.

It would be nice to have an option to set the search combination as default.

This is a great application! I hope to see many new features and skinning options. Great work!
  14. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: IP.Downloads not so great SEO

IP.SEO working sweet on my board. But then again my offerings are probably somewhat unique. But some simple searching has my board on all the 1st page results. My board is only a few months old with <90 users. Haven't even marketed the site yet.
  15. Jonathan B added a post in a topic: Separate fields for description and preview text.

This page explains it all: http://www.producerbay.com/files/

The featured download has embedded media in its description that is not fully implemented at this view as shows the code instead of content. If there were separate fields for description and preview text (similar to ip.content's articles) then I could embed the media without the code showing up like it does.

If there is a workaround for this, I'd like to know.
