Okay, I know it sounds crazy. I didn't believe it myself at first. Then I started thinking about it, and it starts getting scary.

First of all, you must put aside all the media-programmed, propaganda-driven thoughts or irrational fears you might already have about communists. Forget all that big bad Russian stuff that the 80's taught us, that doesn't exist anymore. Think of communism as just a way of life, a social order, an economic standpoint, a lifestyle choice. Take all the visions of sickles and hammers and tanks out of your head for awhile, and then you will be able to see it clearly.

First of all, the Smurfs shared everything. The food in the Smurf village was stored away in those mushrooms the minute it was harvested and then equally distributed to all the Smurfs throughout the year. No one "farmer Smurf" sold his crop to a "consumer Smurf," or saw his labor exploited by another. It was understood that the crop was for the entire Smurf population, not for the sale or profit of one Smurf alone.

Then there were those jobs each Smurf held. There was Handy Smurf, and Painter Smurf, and Brainy Smurf, etc... Each Smurf had his own specific job and was not allowed to try his hand at any other Smurf's assigned task. There actually was an episode where each Smurf tried to do another one's job, and failed. The moral of the story was apparently "Stick to what you do Best" or to put it another way, stick to what the society has chosen for you, or maybe just "You'll get what you get and like it!" Handy Smurf was always building. Painter Smurf was always painting. Everyone accepted what they were and didn't ask questions.

Some other evidence I've gathered may strain the limits of credibility. Decide for yourself: Papa Smurf wore a red cap. All the Smurfs were the same color and sang the same song everywhere they went - stressing their Smurfy unity. Didn't you catch yourself singing that song as a kid? I know you did. Everyone did. Everyone.

The most compelling evidence that the Smurfs were communists comes from their relationship to the arch-villian Gargamel. If you remember, the only thing that Gargamel wanted the Smurfs for was for his own profit. In the first four or five seasons, Gargamel's master plan was to catch the Smurfs, boil them, and turn them into gold. For some reason, in the later years when the show was dying, they started saying that he wanted to eat the poor blue creatures, but for the most part he wanted to turn them into gold. He didn't care about the Smurfs themselves, their culture, or their well-being. All he cared about was getting gold. His only interest in how to get rich, and nothing, nothing would get in his way.

Gargamel was a capitalist.

The evil antagonist of the Smurfs was the ultimate capitalist, terrorizing the peaceful good little communist Smurf community. It all starts to fit together doesn't it?

It makes you wonder why somebody didn't speak up about this before, especially during the 80's with Reagan in the Whitehouse

I guess nobody thought it worth their time.

you could say the smurfs are a metaphor.

just like the Wizard of Oz (Ounce) is a metaphor for the populus movement.

That's according to an idealistic view of communism that is not achieveable, not possible and well an ideal.

The smurfs is a TV show, it doesn't need to be read into, it's entertainment for kids. It's a dream world, one that doesn't exist just like Neverland.

What's up with there being only ONE female Smurf? I'm more concerned about that...

And I guess if a Teletubbie can be gay, a smurf can be communist.

Patently, the Smurfs were NOT communists. If they had been communists, they'd have been red, not blue.

Didn't they dress in red

Smurf society does actually match quite similarly to what Marx would call 'communism' rather than what came to be called 'communism', but then its just a TV show and one Smurf was de facto in charge (Papa Smurf) meaning that their society has a hierachy! My God! Marx would not approve! Papa Smurf must be overthrown, for he is a counter-revolutionary and his hat, beard and trousers must be redistributed to the Smurf proletariat!

I've read far too much about communism for one lifetime....

Edit: I miss Phil Roberts :(

You read about communism? That's so un-American. Chris, why do you hate freedom?
"Rarity by itself shouldn't necessarily be evidence of anything. When one is dealt a bridge hand of thirteen cards, the probability of being dealt that particular hand is less than one in 600 billion [1 in 6 x 1011]. Still, it would be absurd for someone to be dealt a hand, examine it carefully, calculate that the probability of getting it is less than one in 600 billion, and then conclude that he must not have been [randomly] dealt that very hand because it is so very improbable." -John Allen Paulos, Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and Its Consequences

I once journeyed to the states with a copy of The Communist Manifesto and a biography of Trotsky, my sister was utterly convinced that we were going to get arrested without even managing to leave the airport.

Then I sat reading them on my dad's sofa while my step-mum (who is convinced I actually am a Communist) got angrier and angrier.

There isn't anything wrong with wanting everyone to have food, clothing, a place to sleep, and necessities of life. What it turned into, however, is what made communism bad. In fact, it was more of a dictatorship than anything else. The Smurfs isn't the only show to demonstrate idealistic communism. Even shows like StarTrek demonstrate humanity working for the better of everyone else and not for personal gain. While it may be a wonderful idea in theory, it isn't realistic. It turned into one man, or a group of people, dominating over the population unmercifully.

Even democracy has it's flaws. You have a country with billions of people who have a vote, yet we're just in as much crap as we were before. The economy is failing, people are loosing their jobs, and even more so on a global level. And even in democracy, just like other government models, you have groups of people with a lot of money have a lot of influence. There are paid lobbyists who are paid to make sure laws are/are not passed in the best interest of corporations.

The biggest problem we have in almost every situation is greed. That's one thing you do not see in idealistic TV shows where everything gets along. When ever a character comes along that is greedy, they are looked down upon like they're crazy. Yet there are many people in the world who actively exploit one another for profit.

Why were people no up in arms about the Smurfs? Perhaps that when people hear communism they think of hitler, sadam, etc... When you seem the smurfs you think "oh they're sharing everything. it's a kids show. kids should learn to share". The last thing on peoples mind is "communism!!".

As this is apparently required by Stephen: neither of those people are or claimed to be Communists (though arguably both claimed to be 'socialists' though not in the sense that most people would understand the term in the West). That said, the rest of your post is actually surprisingly accurate.

I give you a B+ and a smiley face.
