But know the maintitle background images are not showing up.

In your case this should be: /home/admin/public_html
Once you have changed a Friendly URL setting, make sure to rebuild the friendly URL files in the Blog Tools section.

that's done it. thank you. for some reason i thought it wanted the board url

the checker in the ACP says the freidnly URL is not configured correclty even though it works. The gallery block only displays a broken image now as where before (non friendly URL mode) the image was displayed.
hummmmm.
