Hello guys,

Am wondering, can I start working on a new skin on 2.1 BETA 4? So when the final release comes out that I just have to replace the altered coding from BETA 4-5 to 2.1 Final (usually Matt includes this in his upgrade files)?

Ofcourse I know that I might have to alter some skin files after the upgrade or that I even might loose some skinning of my own...

Reason why I'm asking is that I want to have the skin ready before I do the live upgrade...I'm guessing it will take me 4-5 days to make a complete and awesome skin...

What do you guys advice?

Regards,
Marcello

I'd say: go ahead but keep in mind template bits may change due to bug fixing, etc so be prepared to re-do some of your work.

I will be providing a diff export with each release announcement which will show you which template bits have changed and what's changed.

Matt, that's awesome. If changes are added into a file as they usually (always) are, than everything is fine I guess! :)

One more question though...would it be wise to start skinning a new (not upgraded live board) IPB 2.1 BETA 4...after done with skinning upgrade the board to 2.1 Final (copy all skin files etc..) and then launch the upgrade script?

Or would that be impossible and should I first do the upgrade to my live board and then start skinning?

Regards,
Marcello

I'd install a test copy of IPB 2.1 (adhereing to the license which allows such a test board as long as every effort is made to ensure that new members cannot register) and develop your skin.

When a stable version of IPB 2.1 is released, upgrade your live 2.0.4 to 2.1.0 and then copy your skin across to your live upgraded board.

I'm aware of what he said. I'm trying to narrow it down. :lol:

If it doesn't come out this week, then oh well.

Thank you for your fast reply.

By test copy you mean the latest BETA version of 2.1?

So if I do the following, it would be alright:
  • 1. Leave my IPB 1.3.1. as it is right now;
  • 2. Create a subdirectory on my server and install the 2.1 BETA 4 there;
  • 3. Start working on the skin for 2.1 on the 2.1. BETA 4 version;
  • 4. After completion, wait till full and stable version of 2.1. Final comes out;
  • 5. After release, install the final 2.1 release;
  • 6. Do the live upgrade from 1.3.1. to 2.1. Final;
  • 7. After a succesfull upgrade, copy the skin files into the upgraded version directory (import css etc);
  • 8. Done?
Thanks for your support so far.

Regards,
Marcello

I'd say that's a good plan Marcello.

First let me say, Thank you IPB, Matt and staff for providing such a wonderful board. I have had mine now for two years and enjoyed it alot.

Currently for some site owners I installed the beta versions on my reseller account so that they can field test skins, mods, and third party add-ons.

I know some sites might offer this as well, I just wanted to be part of a family. :D

Again thank you Matt, IPB and Staff for all the great work you guys have produced.

:thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Take care,
