Hey,

I'm sorry to link to another topic ( http://forums.invisi...howtopic=184463 ) but I want to know whether there is a problem with my host - whether they are following bad practises or not - and I am not getting much of a response from the previous topic (which is not totally related). :-"

I am personally quite happy with my host - they use Australian based servers, I have a good bandwidth cap and 1gb of space (which I know is not huge, but is perfectly suitable for my needs) - all for A$19.95 per month.

However Wazoo has stated that he has had problems connecting to my site ( http://www.utopic.info ) but I am not sure how widespread this problem is. To quote:

I am still thinking that your provided URL is wrong.

Hmmmmm, FireFox does find the original URL ... very odd ... now, what was the original question? <g>

I'm quite confused as to whether I have a problem or not - most people seem to be able to locate my site without problem...

I would appreciate any assistance/advise! :)

I found the site without problem. IT may have been a DNS problem on the part of the person trying to visit the site.
In keeping with new federal laws, I give notice that all my posts are intended to annoy. My real name is in my profile.

Works fine here, allthough it took about 30 seconds to download the page ( 2mb broadband ).

Works fine on my end. (1.5mb ADSL)

PS. Downloads in 1 sec on my end as i'm in Australia so oversea's users would take longer for Australian based servers as there is a lag (Well the data has along way to travel!).

Thanks for all your responses, much appreciated. I'm fairly confident that there isn't a problem now.

Yeah, the servers are Australia based as most of my users will be in New Zealand/Australia, hence the delay.

Whats hosting in AU like, cos I know the home based lines were crippled with transfer limits very early on in comparison to the rest of the world...

To quote from my host, NetLogistics, for A$19.95/month:
  • 1,000 MBs Disk Space
  • 10 GBs Data Transfer
  • Host 2 Domains
  • Park 4 Domains
  • Unlimited Subdomains
  • Unlimited Email Accounts
  • Unlimited MySQL Databases
  • Extremely Low Latency
  • FREE Setup
For $29.95/month:
  • 1,500 MBs Disk Space
  • 15 GBs Data Transfer
  • Host 4 Domains
  • Park 6 Domains
  • Unlimited Subdomains
  • Unlimited Email Accounts
  • Unlimited MySQL Databases
  • Extremely Low Latency
  • FREE Setup
And for $39.95/month:
  • 2,000 MBs Disk Space
  • 20 GBs Data Transfer
  • Host 6 Domains
  • Park 8 Domains
  • Unlimited Subdomains
  • Unlimited Email Accounts
  • Unlimited MySQL Databases
  • Extremely Low Latency
  • FREE Setup
You get the idea...

Anyway, definitely more expensive than a US-based server but the response times are hugely different also. The telco market here is still dominated by Telstra but it is improving ... from what I have found so far NetLogistics are one of the best hosts in Australia for price, service and quality.

On a completely different matter, is it difficult to have your site mirrored somewhere? I.e. for someone in the northern hemisphere can I have a US based server but for anyone in the southern hemisphere can I have an Australian based server? If this is possible is it costly? And will the forums synchronise etc?

Its probably best to get your site hosted in the US anyway, from the UK the pings are extremely fast to my server, and you get a lot more for your money.

Bandwidth is a lot more important than disk space and you are getting like no bandwidth on any of those package. Do most people really need 2 gigs of web space?

I get 20gb per month data transfer in the first package for $19.95 per month.

I might be getting "no bandwidth" but if I don't need a huge amount then what I have is perfectly suitable. What I consider to be more important is access time - and it is obvious that a server based in Australia is going to suit the Pacific more than one based in the US.
