I wake up today to my homepage to find 3 red bars. I've had BBC as my homepage for 5 years now and the page keeps getting cluttered. It's a shame since it's the best news source, however biased it is.... but, without it I wouldn't know half the stuff happening across the world.

Made me curious now, so I'll check it out tongue.gif

Not too bad for me, but I think they could make it wider and realize not as many people view that low of a screen size anymore.

They added them and weren't there before... so... now it's basically distracting.

They've been adding alot to the current interface and it has got alot more cluttered. Hopefully they redesign it with the new features soon.

I use the whole bbc.co.uk site a LOT and I think it's pretty good. The bars don't bother me at all.

I thought it was the policy of the BBC to be so unbiased they shoot down any article they has the smallest trace of being biased?

Eh, no news source is perfect.

I agree. As long as humans write the news, it will be biased. I just thought the BBC was considered as "unbiased" as it gets...

Yeah, everyone has inherent bias, it's impossible to be completely unbiased. Your past, your experiences, your education all contribute to your subconcious bias.

The difference between the BBC and other organisations is the BBC's is unintentional where it occurs, and they work to remove it as far as they can, whereas many other organisations have an intentional bias.

[edit]Oh, about the site... I wasn't keen on them at first, but I'm getting used to them.

Eh, no news source is perfect.
During the troubles with the IRA in Britain they used to refer to 'Republican Forces' rather than 'Terrorists' as the BBC felt that 'terrorists' was too biased. wassat.gif

But yes of course, no news source is 100% unbiased, because news is written by human beings and no matter how hard you try humans will always subconsciously bias the news, even your choice of words, as in the example I gave can bias something. Consider the difference between, for example, referring to a US 'occupation of' Iraq, or a US 'presence in' Iraq.

The BBC certainly has no agenda, and certainly has no intention of being a biased new agency. They are without a doubt the most impartial, unbiased and reliable news agency around the world. I'm in Spain at the moment and have only two English channels CNNi and BBC World - I had no idea that around the world people had access to the same quality BBC News reporting that we get in the UK, with barely any advertising. Although it is strange to see advertising on the BBC.

I don't know if you've been reading along with "The Editors" blog - if you haven't it's the last link on the left hand menu bar - but there's lots of useful blog post in there. There's many posts where people have written in saying "your coverage is biased towards israel' and then you get people writing in about the same report and programme saying "your coverage is biased towards palestine". They must be doing something right if people think things are biased in different directions.

I wanted to point you to a link to "Newswatch" but I can't seem to get to it from Spain... I'm not sure if it's a UK only thing, but I get a 403 forbidden on my usual bookmark for it... So instead.. how many news outlets do you know are so open about their sources? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/help/3281815.stm

Of course I agree with the poster who said it's impossible to avoid people's prejudices in reporting the news, there's no way of making a person impartial, but the BBC ALWAYS tries to contrast one opinion with another in order to allow the viewer to make up their own mind.

As for the bars, they're growing on me.

That'll make the BBC biased then!
