All of my client forums have been swarmed by bots in the last few weeks, I've got a list of the most common ones that you can add to your forum's ban list, with a wildcard setup to block any emails from that domain. You can't stop them all, but this has cut down on most forum spam.

Most of those mail addresses are the same as the one I have on my forum as well.. I offer a suggestion to a future version of IBP...

My server admin experience taught me about using a program associated with gaming called PunkBuster.. well the service is irrelevant, but there was a feature that allowed servers to stream their lists on who that server had banned from one server to another (assuming the server admin had elected to enable the streaming) or had the option of downloading a file in which he/she could upload to the server as a banlist (alternate to non-streaming). We have had several attempts for spam on our forums, and while it's painstaking to spend more time deleting the accounts and banning the email addresses, would it be possible for IBP to implement a simple file, perhaps just a .txt file, that can be shared by other IBP admins that can automatically install whatever email address and IP addresses in that file? Basically, when you didn't know you had a problem to begin with, and then all of a sudden you have about 60 spam accounts, adding each one is a time consuming process.. would be really spiffy if we can import a ban list...

maybe one id for the futere version, invision must build in a anti spam system (filter) for the board, include all know spam mail adresses, and let dynamicly update it , if there are new one's.

G8, just what I wanted .... I recently noticed that I was attacked my spam bots, altho they just manage to simply register & no posting but still it makes the fourm dirty.

I cann't understand how come they pass advance GD image verification. I hate to add email verificaion since it make then user do many steps to simply join the forum. Hmm I wish there is somthing new in 2.2ver.

[list][*]IPB's image verification scheme, although more advanced than some, is not truly all that advanced. Even the addon for Simple Machine Forum's image captcha can be broken pretty easily after some simple filters are applied. A decent captcha is one that requires the user to actually interact with the visuals, be it a simple question, a low level IQ test question, or something similar. Here's a writeup from someone at Carnegie Mellon school of Computer Science.

I really like this explanation on image captchas. I had once seen a 2d image taking on an effect of a 3d wireframe to show the letters, and although it could also be bypassed easily, until I saw Gimpy, it was the best I had thus far seen - I was unable to find that theoretical example site just now. This is an example of Gimpy's advanced image captchas. The researchers could create the images, but the bots could only defeat the captcha 33% of the time. If the captcha required the user to get all 5 of the word PAIRS 100% of the time, I don't think it'd be possible for bots to break this captcha (by itself, i.e.: not hacking the code on the server) more than 2% of the time.

Regardless, user interaction alongside a captcha seems to be the best possible approach; but even then, not all "spam" is from bots nowadays -- people are being hired to post spam on forums...yes, actual people.

The punkbuster ideal for IPB future versions is a great idea. I am a gamer as well Hooah for Americas Army. That is a great idea. The gaming clan I am in streams from ACI, AASA, and Punkbuster. If a certain person that tried to enter one of our gaming servers we will get a KICK NOTIFICATON: xxxx was kicked by ACI AASA, PSB Ban List. If we could implement that into a future version of IPB or something close that would be great.

This is a big German provider. They offer free and premium mail. I have reported a couple of e-mail addresses to their abuse department and they have promptly deleted these accounts. Banning GMX is like banning hotmail, gmail, etc...
