Athletes who take Tibet stand 'face Olympic cut'

I don't know the nature of timesonline.co.uk maybe the brits can weigh in on their reputation. But is there anything you'd like to say about that Ysun?

Still, it would be absurd for someone to be dealt a hand, examine it carefully, calculate that the probability of getting it is less than one in 600 billion, and then conclude that he must not have been [randomly] dealt that very hand because it is so very improbable." -John Allen Paulos, Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and Its Consequences

That isn't the Chinese government saying that, that is the IOC.

As for the Times, it is part of Murdoch's media empire so make up your own mind.

Way to go Stephen, way to take the wind out of my sails. <_<

Well thats interesting then...because they've let athletes show support for one cause or another in the past.

Today, too many foreigners don't know China. The China in their minds was the one more than 30 years ago. The poor knowledge and very old impression that most of the foreigners had about China made thousands of Chinese angry. I did say Chinese government has shortcomings, also I never said the Chinese government has no problem.

The thing is most of the western ppl were misleaded by the Medias with prejudice whenever they saw China. It was not just a problem only in these days, the bias reports about China in western countries were beyond the truth for many many years. The reason that the thousands of Chinese overseas protested to the western Medias was actually a burst after a long-term endurance.

I dont think people dont want to know how modern china is. If you have never been its hard to know. Movies and programs show old style china... Its all you see in movies.

For instance when i visit china the elders seem to think i am rich. They are shocked when i tell them how my government taxes me to death and what i have to pay out. Then realise that I am not as rich as they thought.

So really if you have never been to china then you really dont know how modern it is.. the same as chinese people think that living in the Uk is wealthy ..

its not...unless you take money back to china of course.

I was suprised how modern china is... shanghai and Beijing I thought was great. In fact in some parts it's more modern than anywhere else i have seen. Now that i have been my perception is different.

Thanks, loccom, I quite agree with you. The movies and programs always show an old china. I have been in Canada for 2 years and I found when CNN reported China, CNN always chose a dirty place or a corner as the backgound scene for the reporter in the camera. In my memories, CNN never shew a scene about the morden part of China to the western viewers. I believe it's a kind of bias. Comparing with CNN, the Chinese Medias reported the western countries much more objective or even over friendly sometime.

Chinese citizens don't pay high taxes(also the social welfare in China is worse), so they might don't have a notion on the taxes in western countries. Earning money in the western countries and living in China is a good idea, I know an american couple, they are in Beijing and waiting for the birth of their 3rd child on May 1st. They used to earn some money in U.S. for one year and then live in China for 3 years. What suprised me was some western people chose to settle in the Chinese villages far away from the city, even no vehicles reach there.

My suggestion to the ppl who haven't been to China yet is to find some time and save some money and have a travel in China. You will find the life in China actually isn't that worse... :P

Living in China is good for saving on the tax, I agree. If you can afford it (as the westerners who can do), then life is probably pretty good as they'll be able to pay for health care etc. I think why that couple go for the villages is the peace and tranquility, and probably because of the different culture entirely (lets face it major cities are more of a common sight anywhere in the world and you don't experience true traditional culture in them).

I would love to go to China for a while, as I would also like to go Africa to experience life there on a volunteer basis with a charity. I know some people from my school have applied for the 'Prime Ministers Task Force' scheme where they get to go to China to experience government and also large Chinese businesses, before doing some charity work in poor regions. :)

Not exactly. The life in China is much more exciting and spiritoso than in western countries, not just as simple as saving on the tax. You haven't been to China yet, so everything is 'probably' to you, including the 'health care' part, though there are american hospitals and health care centers in China. About that couple, they live in Beijing. The ppl I mentioned who settled in the villages were old ppl, they even don't speak Chinese, but they really have fun in the wild.

From your words I felt you still have a little superiority, that is because you haven't been in Beijing or Shanghai. When you are here, you will find actually you are still not rich enough, though you might have a sallary about 100 or 200 or 300 thousands USD a year...

Don't forget, Chinese like speaking words indirectly and always keeping 10% in mind for some reasons.

I'd also like to say that although protesting the Olympics is one of the most media-attention getting way to protest, getting carried away and/or taking it out on the torch carrier is completely in poor taste.

Attack a person in a wheelchair and a blind guy as a protest? Why don't they just throw a few kittens in a wood chipper while they are at it? Or throw a puppy off a cliff. Oh wait...

I agree with you. Attacking a women is a shame, attacking a women in a wheelchair is even worse than a shame.

Why is it more exciting? Why do you keep shouting pro-China rhetoric?

Quite frankly you're starting to piss me off seeing as it seems you're also incapable of being civil.

My post like this one? I did say Chinese government has shortcomings, also I never said the Chinese government has no problem.

Or should I say China is the most worst and poorest country in the world to conform your bias perception about China?

Just remember, You haven't been to China and seen things by your own eyes.
