Wondering if there was a way to resize and crop all thumbnails, so they're the same size.

You've posted in the wrong forum which is probably why you haven't received an answer. You're supposed to ask for support here.

I'm not sure if this is what you're trying to achieve but you can try the following.

Log in to your AdminCP and go to Components -> IP.Gallery -> Settings

About half way down the page you will find Image Settings: Thumbnails. You can set your thumbnail size here.

Now go to IP.Gallery -> Tools

The first tool on the right under Image Related Tools is Rebuild Images. Clicking it will rebuild all your images including thumbnails.

The files resize proportionately.  If they are not the same proportions when they're uploaded, they won't be the same proportions when they're resized.

And so the discussion turns full circle and I ask the original question.

Wondering if there was a way to crop all thumbnails, so they're the same size.

What brandon is saying is that all pictures uploaded in exactly 4:3 ratio will shrink to 4:3 thumbnails.  If you don't do that, you end up with those wacky looking myspace photo thumbnails that are always a perfect square or whatever size you want.  Even if its a panaramic picture thats 4 times wider than normal.

But I'd suggest a ticket if what systemshock said isn't what you needed.

How some of you people utilize forums on a daily basis and lack the ability to read and comprehend amazes me.

I can't tell if he's asking if this is possible in a future version (e.g. feature request) or looking for help doing it now (support).  If it's the later let me know and I'll move this to the appropriate forum.

At this time there is no way to crop thumbnails (either automatically or manually).  I don't think we plan on adding automatic cropping - we looked at doing this, but without some good heuristic image-reading technologies, it's too easy to end up cropping the upper left or lower-right corner of an image, which just happens to contain empty space in the image and not the main focal point.  I am interested in adding manual cropping for users who wish to do this, but it won't be in the very next release.

Regarding the cropping,

Is it possible to resize to X and then crop the thumbnails that way you don't have to worry so much about the image-reading. Resize an image so that length and width are greater than X, then crop to X. So all thumbnails resized to say as close to 100 x 100 without going under in either width or height, and then cropping anything greater than 100?

I'm asking if it's possible to do it now and in future versions. :)

This feature is a must. With users uploading random pictures, the gallery pages look horrible. We need decent thumbnails. I'd even live with thumbnails cropped randomly. Allowing the user to select their cropped area would be ideal, but for now something needs to be done.. I don't like how the gallery looks with all these off-size thumbnails :(

Other gallery systems like Gallery, give the option to autocrop square thumbnails. So you can choose to use them or not. Then they crop a square around the center of the image. You can also select a different size crop than a square for example if you wanted all images to be 50x100 or 100x100. To handle the cases where some images crop blank space (which doesn't happen too often), they include a manual crop which then lets the user edit the crop selection and resave it.

It satisfies the people that want the option. It satisfies the people that don't want the option. It gives the clean uniform look that many users crave, but also lets them choose to do rectangles instead of squares (for panoramic crops). It also solves the issue of blank cropped images, letting them select a manual crop... as there are usually a lot less images needing to be recropped.

another vote for same size thumbnails. The gallery hook (recent images) looks funky with different sized thumbnails popping up.
