When I have GD2 selected, users are not able to upload. If I change it to ImageMagick, users can upload images and also do BULK uploads.
So the only advantage of using GD2 for images is the ability to use the IP.Gallery feature of rotating an image left or right (which doesn't work if you have imagemagick selected)

Imagemagick not working for rotating images should be reported as a bug in the bug tracker.
If you have trouble using GD2 for normal image uploads, you should submit a ticket. We use GD here and it works fine (in fact, the vast majority of our users, probably 95% or more, use GD2 since it's included with most hosts, whereas imagemagick isn't).
