Surprise Surprise...Leaving VB

Its sad actually. A product that was great turned to junk. How is IPB compared to the older VB3.8 series? Also I have a custom theme I would like to move over how easily is that? I hate to put the people that do the migration through VB4 hell, lol. I'm actually looking to purchase the entire IPS suite. How do you like it? Are there a few boards using the entire suite that I can look at? Also does IPS have an addon like vb.org?

Thanks guys
Carter

Hi,
IPB does not have a mod site like vb.org but here there is a resources area where active licenced customers can download skins and plugins, modifications etc. As for examples of sites running all the IPS products, the IPS Website is completely running on IP. Content and we have all IPS products instaled, as you see the tabs under the IPS logo. I recommend you sign up for a demo, so you could try out IPS suite. (http://www.invisionp.../suite/demo.php)

You can pay someone to convert your skins. I forget the name of the site, its like skinbox or something. I think a staff member here runs it. So if you have the money, I would go that route (I did) if you don't want to deal with the headaches. It's hard learning the new skin system IMO. I knew everything with vBulletin and there was a lot that you could do with it and not as much with this system sadly. But I'm sure someone will argue with me on that fact.

I would honestly take a hard look at xenforo's product. I hate recommending people away from here, but with having vbulletin, I think a lot of the good mod creators are moving over to that system so there will be better conversion of data for any of the mods you have installed. That and I like how clean it looks, feels and the features. It's not too bloated with useless crud like vB.

IPB is lighter weight than vB, which is very nice. It also has decent SEO built into it...though could use some improvement. Overall, you will be happy with the conversion to IPB but not sure how your users will react. A lot of my members still hate the 'watched threads' feature...as do I. It's not as good as 'subscribed threads' in vB as it doesn't seem to keep track of the threads as good. I have some threads that are watched, it has the lil symbol next to it but it doesn't show up in my side bar and the watch threads portion in the settings is just horrid since it shows ALL watched threads rather than the new ones. I've suggested improvements to it but I don't think they will listen to what I've said. I would say that's my biggest gripe about the software. Everything else, I can pretty much deal with. Then the lil things for SEO I've asked about in a thread or 2. If they fixed those 2 things, I would be 100% happy with this software.

Just to add, at one time we did have a separate resource site / forum completely, called IPS Beyond. From what I remember of VB.org, it was broadly similar to that, in that the resources and related support topics were there.

We then moved it to a product we were using at the time (Nexus, although not to be confused with the new one which will be released soon) and now all the resources are here, start with the Resources tab up the top. There are some links in my signature to assist you too. You will be able to view the resources (modifications / skins / hooks etc) but obviously not download them :) , click here to see the downloads for example.

A theme (we call them skins) would have to be redesigned, although I do not see why you could not retain the general colours / design of your current theme, its best someone who has done this already could answer this though, although that is something that would have to be done for you via a custom skinner in most cases.

Does IPS have a service to recreate my skin for me?

Also I would not move to XenForo due to the fact its a beta, no one is REALLY using it, and its JUST a forum.

A long time vB user myself, you will enjoy IPB, I promise :)

Your current vB4 skin at MainelySubarus is straightforward, nothing other than some simple color changes. As long as you are willing to embrace IPB's slight layout differences, then converting this custom skin over to IPB would not be a huge task. I run ForumFlux and sell premade skins, but we do accept custom work from time to time...If you're interested, contact me with some details on the work you need on the skin, and I'll give you a quote.

Good eye. XenForo is great at what it does, but right now, it does very little compared to IPB and vB. It will suit some forums but not most (yet!).

I recently converted from vB3.8.4 - www.cyclechat.net

You say you're interested in the suite - that will cover your current forums, blogs, and chat (shoutbox) ... but in addition you'll get Gallery and Downloads.

I would imagine the gallery would be great for members to show off their pimped scoobies ... but not sure how useful the downloads would be? (maybe swapping progs for reprogramming ECU's - or are they generally done by specialists?)

The technical side of things is very good - there is a free conversion tool available so you can do it yourself (i had a few dry runs, then converted my 1.3mil posts over myself), or alternatively you can get IPS to do it for you for a modest fee. (Note: Not everything is converted fully, so have a look at the converter page beforehand so you can see what doesn't go over).

I did end up having to spend some time tweaking my server to get the speed up, but that's not something my members complained about particularly, just something that niggled me personally. :)

My members haven't all like the change, and some of them have stopped coming to visit - but I expect that was bound to happen anyway, regardless of what software I chose. They had used vB3 for almost 5 years and knew the front-end, as well as I knew the back-end - more so than me even, perhaps.

I would also recommend trying to skin your site similarly to how you have it now. I made the mistake of changing the "look" of the site at the same time as I converted the software, and this really put quite a lot of people off. (I've since had a second skin designed to look like the 'old' site and this has settled things down a good bit).

I've had lots of help from IPS and the community here - especially with tuning my server - and am finally settling back down to enjoying using my site again (lots of little things have bothered people and instead of telling them to get used to it, I've spent a lot of time trying my best to accommodate them. You might feel differently ... lol ).

There are three key things my members complained about:

1) Topic hover preview - the vast majority hated the way it is implemented in IP.Board 3. The hover, move the mouse, click the icon method of preview drove a lot of people mad. Thankfully, there's now a mod that gives you the vB3 hover behaviour, so that one has been sorted.

2) View New Content - "rubbish" is the opinion of a good number of my members. They simply can't get to grips with the results it produces and the way it presents new content. In particular, the repetition of threads that have multiple new posts.

3) Topic read marking - "always losing my place" is a common theme amongst the complaints. vB3 marks a thread read up to the page you last read it to. So if you go to page 25 of a 30 page thread and don't read any further - vB3 will still show the thread as unread and pop you back into the thread at the previous page you read up to. IPB3 just marks the whole thread as read, even if you don't read all the pages.

There are also some niggles with the post editor too, but I understand that this and the other items will likely be addressed in up-coming updates, which will be good. :)

xenForo is generating a lot of excitement and will no doubt mature into a great product; I'm even planning on selling my old vB licenses to buy a license for xenForo - but it isn't a mature product yet and it's really down to you whether you want to invest in it just at this point - the start of the software/company.

Hope all this waffle helps anyway.

Cheers,
Shaun :D

So it might be a good idea to wait for IP.B 3.2?

3.2 is a way off, so I'd recommend against waiting.

Besides, there'll be 3.1.3 before that anyway.

Have you tried the demo - it's a great way to get a feel for how the ACP works. :)

Shaun :D

From a fellow Scoobie owner, IP.Board's complete suite will most likely contain what you need, as you said you were interested in it.

The great news is, for every addon you buy, you get 5% off IP.Board - So when you buy the full suite, you'll save 20%!

And, as others have said, you should check out the free 5 day trial. http://www.invisionpower.com/suite/demo.php

Ah ha ... look ... we've got him hooked ... lol :)

I'm sure someone from IPS will be along to advise shortly.

So - what do you think now you've had a chance to play with it?

Cheers,
Shaun :D

If you send an email to sales@invisionpower.com, they'll probably be more than happy to oblige. :)

It's a little different. I'm fooling around with the admin cp trying to get a feel for it.

One of the handy parts of the IPB ACP is the search function (right-hand toolbar near the top) - type in what feature / setting you're looking for and it offers links to relative items.

It's a really handy tool when you're trying to hunt out those features that you know are there, but just can't remember where to find them. :)

Have fun, and don't be afraid to ask if you want to know something ...

Cheers,
Shaun :D

I second the nifty live search in ACP.
I'm a new IPB client too, and am very happy with the support and community, plus the development pipeline for future works us encouraging.

My new content search doesn't do that any more. I changed a setting way back and it only shows one instance of a new topic I've not read

Ah, hang on, maybe I should add a disclaimer to the View New Content part of my previous post - I'm using Sphinx for search, and not the built-in search.

I just created a thread on this topic, perhaps you could post how you did it over there.
