I have a phpBB3 board (www.thefogbow.com/forum/) that has about 450 members and ~180,000 posts. I'm thinking of converting it to IP Board.

I'd like to buy IP Board and install it initially on a domain (www.planetmoonbat.com) that I only use for testing. There I could spend a significant amount of time (more than the 5-day demo) teaching myself all the various features and operations, and testing things for myself, before I convert my phpBB3 board. I can see that administering IP Board will be very different from administering a phpBB3 board.

If I buy one copy of IP Board and install it initially on my testing domain, when I'm confident in using it and ready to convert my phpBB3 board, can I then delete it from my testing domain and install it on the domain I normally use?

Also, I have several modifications ("mods") installed on my phpBB3 board. Do I need to remove those before converting that forum to IP Board?

Thanks for any help you can give.

The IP.Board standard license allows for one active community and one "test" community. The test community must be turned offline and have registration disabled.

As for converting mods - Most phpBB mods will not convert to IP.Board. You don't need to remove them, but they just won't convert.

Cool. That's exactly what I needed to know.

OK, I do have one more question. I see that I can implement my own smilies, and maybe my own BBCodes.
My current board has a lot of custom smilies and a HUGE number of custom BBCodes.

I'm pretty sure that when I'm ready to convert my phpBB3 board, it will convert:

  • all the forums,
  • all the threads,
  • all the posts, and
  • all the user accounts.

But I'm not sure about smilies and BBCodes. Can I set up IP.Board so that those are converted, too?

Custom BB Codes are supported in the phpBB3 converter.

The smilies you could also use just by copying the files over from your smiley directory to the smiley directory on IPB.  You can also do the same with your gallery avatars.  I remember when I upgraded from PHPBB a fair amount of my information was able to transfer over
