I like IP.Blog a lot, but a BIG problem I have with it is how guest comments are handled. These are a few things:
  • There should be a place for guests to put their name.
  • There should be a Q&A challenge or captcha box to prevent spam comments.
  • It would be nice if people could post comments via their Disqus or OpenID accounts.
  • Comment moderation: right now, to see comments that need to be approved, I have to: 1. click on my blog, 2. click on "Edit Blog Settings," 3. click on "Manage Your Blogs," 4. comments needing approval show up on the right. It took me forever to find that page! Why can't these be shown to me on the homepage of my blog, instead of being buried?
  • Comments in Gallery, Downloads, and Content should be checked for spam with Akismet, as in Blog.
All of these things, with the possible exception of integrating Disqus and OpenID, seem like they would be really simple; and from reading the forum, these features seem highly requested. Can an IPS employee comment on the likelihood of these features being added and, if so, when that might be?

Thanks!

I second that. Here is my rant on this... ;)

@4: I always thought, that the blog owner can see unapproved comments just like every other comment under the entry. It is just in another color. Is that not right?

Only if you're actually viewing the entry, though, right? As in, to check for comments the way you're suggesting, I would have to look through every one of my blog posts to see if there are unapproved comments at the bottom.

But with the new IP.Blog 2.4 you should see the word QUEUED beside the number of comments. And the number of comments are shown in the entry list of an individual blog too! So that is an improvement.

I don't see that beside the number of comments. Maybe I don't have the latest version? (I'm using the hosted community).

Irregardless, it doesn't make sense to only show non-approved comments on the "Manage Your Blogs" page. Comments that have not been approved should be shown in red in the "Recent Entries" widget on the front page of the blog, just like they are on the "Manage Your Blogs" page.

Sorry for the bump, but I highly second Disqus integration.

I have been thinking of that too, I would like ability for registered board members to use normal board comments system while guests could use disqus.

In the newest version of IP.Blog, my first and second requests have been added! Thank you IPS!! If those features could be added to Gallery, Downloads and content, that would even better!

As far as my third request goes, I'm officially retracting it  I'm satisfied with a place for people to put their name (an email address would be kind of nice, though), Akismet, and a captcha. I really hope these will be added to comments in the other apps, though..

That's what I'd like to see as well :) I hope IPS or some awesome developer gives us the option.

BUT: There ist no way to retrieve the guest name in a IP.Content feed block. :( And the name is not shown in the recent comments CBlock in a blog itself. There is much to do!

Well, the CAPTCHA for guest comments still let some spam bots slip :(

A Q&A challenge would really help!

Frankly, if you're going to allow guests to comment or post, you should accept the fact that some spam will get through. We are happy to put a captcha on the form, but it's well known at this point that some bots can get past reCAPTCHA (and other captcha implementations), so it's only going to go so far. If you are concerned about spam, require registration.

That's true, but it certainly cuts back on the amount of spam that's posted. Akismet would also help on the other apps (beside blog). I had to disable guest comments in IP.Gallery because one evening I found there were 312 spam comments on an image (which I deleted). Then, a few days later, there were 697 spam comments on the same image. A captcha or Q&A would very likely have stopped that bot from posting all those comments.

I still have guest comments disable in Gallery and Downloads because of this issue (and also because of this bug).

I would like to see captcha supported the same (as blog currently) across all comments. We'll have to double check on that for future app updates.

So here we are, a year later, and 2.5.2 has most of these features, and allowing guests to post comments is great, right?

What would make my life easier is being able to change the defaults for member blogs regarding guest posting.  Unless I've missed something, if you allow guest posting, it's up to the member to set the option to override that or moderate posting.  It would be nice to allow guests to post, but leave it up to the members to either explicitly allow guests to post on their own blog, or the default is to moderate guest posting.  The job market being what it is these days, there are plenty of people with nothing better to do than manually post spam.  And being able to delete comments on their blogs still doesn't keep people from reporting said spam and asking moderators to delete it.
