I'm so fed up with vbulletin's 4.x.x "Gold" product. It's bloated, extremely slow, unreliable, loaded with security flaws and doesn't offer ANY decent optimization capabilities. . .

so... after "upgrading" my site and forums and then having to update my dedicated servers (multiple times) to increase ram, etc to "maintain" a bloated vb... I'm FED UP.

I would love for members with large boards to share their URL's so I can test pagespeed, look at js & css load times for normal sites/usage, various themes (basically, is ISB a nightmare to theme like vb is??)

If you've made the switch, I would love to hear how your members took it, where they frustrated? Happy? what were the major complaints/issues . . .

Talk to me peeps- what are your thoughts?

It is your forum. You run it the way you want to run it. If that means using IPB then so be it.

Hi,

What do you class as a 'large board'?

We have 1.7million posts but would not class us as large compared to others such as neowin

Neowin.Net

Also: This might be helpful.

Just remember that everybody has different hardware and that can effect performance. Neowin runs dedicated and is colocated.

Aside from Neowin, which is indeed a very large and busy community, there is NBC and even nVidia.  Neither being as large as Neowin but both being well known companies.

I would suggest to check forums which are using 3.2.x and NOT 3.1.x or before versions assuming you are going to run 3.2.x version.

ah....thank you these boards are nice- but are there any out there that are more Content/Article based, rather than forum based??  The CMS sections/areas are my biggest concern, rather than the forums. Honestly, the forums are the least of my concerns. It's member submitted articles that need to be properly classified, tagged, listed, meta data applied, etc. I haven't been able to find any examples of IPB CMS

There are many examples of IP.Content in use in this thread:

Some links may be out of date and the size of the sites will vary - they are all user-contributed links.

hehe, seems half of them have since switched to WordPress, a few are gone altogether. Its seems IPB is an excellent choice for Forums, but severely lacking the CMS areas.

IP.Content is admittedly a bit more advanced but once it's learned it can be very powerful.  You can try out the suite for free by signing up for a demo.
http://www.invisionp.../suite/demo.php

IP.Content has so much power and functionality to offer that it can be intimidating.  There isn't a GUI for putting a front page together, instead you need to design it with PHP/HTML, but once a template is put together, doing individual pages or content actually becomes much easier.

That would actually be considered large overall. Yes, there are larger forums, but 1.7 million posts is quite a lot among all forums, although 8,654 members isn't (amazing post:member ratio, btw).

www.talkaudio.co.uk
That has a "magazine" buiilt on IPcontent, and the forums are at 23k members with 4mil+ posts.
The servers are running a little slow at the moment, and the forum skin is very "heavy", and we are on 3.14 on that site. We are in the process of working out 3.2 on our dev environment http://dev.talkaudio.co.uk which is the 3.2 version and we have ditched the heavy skin on there - however, this is on a single shonky server for dev only.
When we push the 3.2 out on the live environment, it will be peachy. As for ditching VB - we did, and it was the best thing we ever did.

From what I hear, VB is faster than IPB. But IPB looks better.

I wouldn't switch, unless IPB have provided a way to match the URLs. They don't with their blog converters, fortunately we made our own.

I have ran side by side test with 3.2.3 and vb 4.1.7, same site, same server, same load right after a conversion..... and IPS is in fact a little faster! :)

Are there large or very active boards running IPB 3.2.x ?
I would like to check them out.
